Dutch v. Herwerden bike (be careful, picture HEAVY)
Earlier this year I bought this Van Herwerden frame online in Holland (that is Holland in Europe). Last month I finally was able to bring it home as checked-in luggage. It sure was worth the wait.
Today I finished putting together this mid eighties Dutch build bike. It's a Columbus SL frame with mostly Dura Ace 80s components. I have no experience with STI, so it has taken me some time to get the shifting right. After a trip to my local LBS for advise I think I got it.
I'm very pleased with the results. After finishing placing this posting I'm going for a spin to see how it performs.

Looks great!
I hope it performs as good as it looks. Alot of nice detail on the frame and the paint is pristine. That along with top notch Shimano running gear should make this one a keeper...

Well, just came back from a 15 mile ride. It was sweeeeet! I did have to stop a few times to make some adjustments to the brakes and the front derailleur is still not working right. I had to temporarily put on a Campy C-Record since the DA derailleur I have is a clamp-on version. But I didn't think that should matter as far as performance. It also would be nice to change the cassette from a 7-speed UG to an 8-speed HG. But that's for later...

It's a little unclear, but I have read that certain frames from this Dutch bike store were made by Chesini. And when I Google Chesini Columbus bikes I can see a lot of similarities. However, I'm not sure if this is any proof that it actually is a Chesini build frame.
Also, I own a set of Delta brakes as well and I'm so tempted to put them on this bike. The 'problem' is I don't have a complete C-Record set (just brakes and front derailleur) and the stopping power would be so much worse than the Dura Ace brakes. For now I keep it the way it is.

I think you could be right. Chesini and Zullo built frames for Van Herwerden. I once owned a Herwerden built by Zullo:

On the headtube it said 'Zullini'. 'Z' engravings were present, as with Zullos offered as Zullo. Your frame shows more resemblance with Chesini. Your frame shows 'H' engravings and there is an explicit mentioning of 'Herwerden' on the headtube (engraved), so with your frame they went further than only the Herwerden brandname on DT and ST. I don't know what exact (custom) specifications were available with a Zullo or Chesini built Herwerden. I do know I have seen very sophisticated beautifull examples, including cromovelato and so on.
Van Herwerden is still in business and the shop is advocate of fine steel. Nowadays Jan van Dalen of Duell builds the Herwerdens.

I really like this bike, nice to see a bit of local history (van Herwerden is very close to my house) end up in loving hands across the pond. Happy riding!

70's V.Herwerden
I own an old Van Herwerden, non engraved Criterium model Reynolds 531 with a gazelle bottom bracket.
I also have two Chesini Uno X models, the head engraving appears to be done with the exact same tooling tip, as well as the style of the rear brake bridge.
Does anyone know when in houise builds were discontinued? Or if they ever actually did? Other searches mentioned that the family had some good builders at one point.

I would love to see yours build up, so the crit-geometry becomes more visible.
In the early 80's their frames were built by Chesini, but before that by v. Herwerden themselves. Mine is from '82 and I believe it's one of the house builds. The Chesini ones have engraved head tubes and other engravings.
