Downtube Shifter Help

I would like to mount a pair of Shimano 600 tri-color downtube shifters but the frame has no brazed-on bosses, how can I make this happen?

I don't know of any clamps that have the proper boss size for indexed Shimano shifters.

Would something like this work?

I don't think the shape of the post or boss is quite right. shimano did at one time make a clamp for these shifters. you need to get a pic of one and start checking bike shops.

this is the clamp but there special backing peices for these. I am not sure if the standard concave style will work.

Not a problem if you can find a Shimano shift lever boss to solder on - If you go with a standard lever that fits the campy type boss you just silver solder on the boss using a jewelry torch and regular silver solder and flux used for soldering copper pipe plumbing - Yes this works - And yes it is strong enough to do the job - Follow the links for a little ore info...

Problem with shift lever boss: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...pes?highlight=

Regular Campy boss and other things to silver solder on see ART 296: http://www.framebuilding.com/Bosses.htm

Fairly good Chicom torch: http://www.harborfreight.com/micro-torch-42099.html

AH HA!! this is it. if you don't grab it I just might have to scoop it up for the spares bin

the backing plates of course adapt the shimano shifter to the boss, but that funky cutting on the edge adapt the backing plate to the clamp.

Looks like a winner to me. I'd buy it and take a chance if it were me. Heck, I may if you pass. Lol.

Rats - Are there or is there a braze on boss of this type...

If so it must really be elusive...

Heres an interesting post on these shifters on a standard boss...

I've got one of those clamps on my Schwinn. The bike I got it from had some paint damage where the bezels hit the tube, so I smoothed the back edge of them a tiny bit with a file.
