Haha. Probably not. I'm going all out on this one, though. Ol' mom and pops dumped a bunch of money into me over the years.

Great Job, I know he is going to like/love it..

Sons are precious!!

My #1 son gave me my first 79 Raleigh Competition GS some 30 years ago. A little over a year ago, he gave me the 1996 Litespeed Classic..

The Father & Son love is strong, throw in the bicycles, and it can't get any better...

No, the catalog is correct - BUT: 531cs is a mixed tubeset, not a tubing designation. The 531cs tubeset = 531c main triangle with 501 fork and stays.

I dig- saying the fork is 531CS is saying it's 501 because the fork in the 531CS tubeset is 501.

But kinda tricky...

I've made a little progress. The headset, brakes and rear fender are now installed. Hopefully I'll have the wheelset built by the end of the month. Most everything else should be on the bike by then.

Cut that top fender bolt down so it doesn't show through the hole like that.

Extra credit points are awarded for getting that stuff faced.

Oh, right. There'll be lots of trimming to do when she's all set. Extra credit? I just want to go outside during recess.

Looks like you're making good forward progress, Justin. Your fender work is nicely done. I wish I had holes to mount fenders to... (I spent a couple hours putzsing around on my project, and it looks like I went backwards instead of forwards).

Anyhow, nice work

The progress on this is fantastic, Justin!

watching this, and watching Anton's build last year makes me all set to do some serious build this winter.

Looking really nice Colonel! What did you use for the bolt extender to mount the fender to the BB bridge? Is it threaded stock inside of a sleeve? I also like the cork washers - where do you get them?

Thanks for all the positive comments, fellas. I'm digging this bike. It's easily the nicest and most thought out of my recent builds.

Yessir. I meant to do it prior to PCing, but I was careful and I don't think there's a difference. I agree. I mean how much more expensive would it be for the framebuilder to add a "die" (as my wife called it) to the seat stay bridge? Certainly worth it. If it's not meant to be a racing frame it should come standard with a tapped hole.

Did you notice the last pic in post #61? I put my "Anton" hat on when figuring that one out. That's a bracket for a Spanninga dyno headlight. There'll be no front rack so I'm going to use it. The crown is drilled, but threaded M6. I chased the threads, used a cable housing adjuster to mount it and drilled the adjuster to fit 22ga wire. Now I just have to revisit your threads and see how you managed to route the wire inside the fork. When I do that this will be a pretty seamless wiring job.

Thanks! I've found myself late at night halfway into a fender install and not having what I needed. The last few times I've been to the hardware store I've bought way more than I needed to put in the "just in case" box. It came in handy yesterday.

You're correct. That is a piece of 5M threaded stock, aluminum sleeve spacers, nylon locknuts, fender washer and a star washer. Those are actually the leather washers that come with the VO fender sets. This connection is actually very sturdy; moreso than I figured it'd be.

Side note: Cartridge bearing headsets are remarkably smooth. The difference is very, very noticeable. I'm for 'em.

Nice! From the looks of that fork crown, I'm guessing it's a Tange fork/crown? The crown looks very similar if not identical to the one on my Shogun. If there is a vent hole in the steerer tube right where the crown is, the wire can get fed through that and then down through the fork blade... but GOOD LUCK snaking in a tracer wire! I almost gave up before I finally got it.

That would be totally slick integration if you can pull that off!

It is a Tange crown/steerer. So you suggest starting from the crown? My inclination was to start from the dropout as the hole in the crown is about twice the diameter of the vent hole in the fork crown. What'd you use for a tracer wire? I was thinking about a guitar string.

I hope I can make it happen; I'll give it my best.

Colonel, use an unwound guitar string with a 45 degree bend in the end as the tracer wire. Maybe an unwound G ?
