What's between your butt and saddle?

Which padded shorts do you think are best ? Who makes the best pad? Who makes the best padded wool shorts? Etc ....

P_M 08-23-11 08:47 AM

Trousers.

rootboy 08-23-11 08:51 AM

Why...shucks. Butt of course !

rhm 08-23-11 08:51 AM

No pad for me.

auchencrow 08-23-11 08:52 AM

Denim, cotton.

ColonelJLloyd 08-23-11 09:00 AM

Nashbar or Bell liner under cotton shorts for rides > 10 miles or so. Otherwise just whatever I happen to be wearing (cotton shorts, wool slacks, Nudie suit, Speedo, etc).

rootboy 08-23-11 09:03 AM

OK Colonel. Speedo !? Please submit pics. Second thought ...maybe not. :D

I don't know the answer to any of your questions. I have some L. Garneau bibs, some Performance gel Century shorts, an old pair of Theresa Jackson, and a couple others. I'm not sure any one is better than the others. I've been experiencing some chafing issues lately that I never had before. It's not the pads, and I don't believe it's a saddle issue either; doesn't matter if I'm on a Concor, Brooks Pro, Brooks Swift... I've come to the theory that back in the day when I wore wool shorts with actual chamois, the pads were wider. Now, with narrower pads, the stitching at the edge gives me fits. I'd say the best combo I have right now is the Jackson shorts (which have a wide pad, although it's just a piece of fleece) and the Swift.

padded shorts have always been the norm for me, but i'm slowly making the transition over to just regular shorts, pants, or whatever I'm wearing.

Vaseline and/or Bag Balm when warranted. I've been known to use a little talc from time to time as well.

khatfull 08-23-11 09:19 AM

Well, I'll be the weird one....from my 41 days I still like the feel of bibs. I like the lack of waistband of any sort and I generally like a chamois.

Although I did pick up a pair of inner shorts recently and have been riding (before the @#$%^&* foot) in them with khaki shorts.

I use padded shorts. I don't think it does anything as padding, per se, but I like how it absorbs and manages sweat.

chipcom 08-23-11 09:27 AM

For anything under 50 miles (and sometimes more), we don't need no stinkin padded diapers!

Ex Pres 08-23-11 09:31 AM

Pearl Izumi bibs. I've some cheap liners, too, but the bibs are much better. I haven't tried any others, but they work well enough for me.

Cycling shorts or bib shorts. I have the Performance brand Ultra 2 bibs and shorts. Right now you can get them on sale if you print out the web site price.
If someone gave me some $220 bibs I would be glad to do a comparison. Until then, it's $70 Performance bibs.

You can also watch the Bonktown website for bibs and shorts. There will be 1 item at a time on sale for 30 minutes then it changes. Clothing, wheels, complete bikes. It's not C&V but there are deals to be had.

For long rides, I'm on a recumbent. Pure joy.

rootboy 08-23-11 09:34 AM

Now, I realize this is potentially a somewhat personal question, talking about your fromunder and all. I like padded shorts, but I'm a bit "challenged" in the natural padding department. I guess the best pad I've found is in a pair of Nike shorts I have. Still have my old chamois lined Black Bottoms, but can't get into them anymore. Thought I'd try a pair of Ibex wool Duo's, was wondering if anybody had tried those. Mixed reviews on the pad.

Afraid of the spokes!

Strangely enough, I am most comfortable with padded on my newer selle-italia saddle (on the Trek 1.2), but prefer no or very little padding on the brooks saddle (Schwinn Voyageur). Seriously thinking of getting a brooks racing style saddle for the Trek.

Two presents from Mrs. Gomango.

Hincapie bibs- They are new for my birthday, and I've only used them several times. As nice as any I've ever used, that's for sure.

Rapha "touring shorts" for anything in town and often over "thread bare" DeMarchi shorts for longer rides.

Mrs. Gomango knows I won't throw the DeMarchis out, so she prefers I cover what may hang out!

I also have a pair of Team Vanilla "Volers" that I haven't taken out of the package. My brother bought them for me, but I would have to lose 20 pounds at least to wear these outside. :)

I have GOT TO wear padding on my circa '74 Brooks pro. Sucker is still hard as a rock. never broke it in as I was always using a Team Pro instead.

 they do make .."skirt" guards, you know.

brockd15 08-23-11 09:52 AM

I've found that triathlon shorts work well for me. I don't want much padding, but I do want the chamois.
But it really depends on how far I'm riding. I'm good with just about anything up to around 120 miles, after that it starts to matter.
