Early 1980s Basso
Presenting my early 80s Basso!
Picked up the frameset over the winter, and it became my first vintage project build. Really enjoyed the process, and learned a lot. Even glued my first set of tubulars!
The frame tubing sticker is missing, but there is a Columbus sticker on the fork. That, plus the Campy dropouts, front derailleur braze-on mount, Super Record headset, friction shifters, and BB that came with it...tell me this is probably a Gap frameset. I can't find a serial number anywhere, though. (It does have a Cinelli BB shell, but no sign of a serial number there or anyplace else.) It has a single set of water bottle braze-ons.
I built it up with Campy SR derailleurs, brakes/levers seatpost, quill pedals, and a Campy Strada 180mm 52/42 crankset. Wanted to remain true to the early 80s, so chose a six speed freewheel. The Selle Italia Turbo saddle is also an original from the 80s, not a re-issue.
Wheels are Campy Record hubs, with Nisi 290 rims. Continental Competition tubulars. Bearings and grease are now brand new. The only components not period correct are the Nitto quill stem and bars. I just can't find an old stem that elevates enough for me, and I want this to be a rider rather than a wall-hanger.
Speaking of riding...managed to find some old shoes with slotted cleats, and it's been a blast re-learning how to ride with toe clips and straps --- and friction shifters. I was born in 1969 and began riding seriously in my early teens, but had to finance my bike from paper route earnings. A Basso like the one I just built up is what I dreamed about owning at the time, and it's been very satisfying seeing it come to life at last.
I'd be interested in any help from the Basso experts who can help confirm this is a Gap, and give a more exact year of manufacture.

1987 Centurion LemansRS 54cm, to part out/upgrade....
When I saw the drivetrain, decided to secure it.
Wheels: Shimano 600EX sealed bearings, Matrix Titan anodized rims, 7sp freewheel rear.
Group: Shimano RSX 3x7 compact triple STI. The STI's are stuck.
Calipers: Exage, should polish up OK. Maybe I'll find some black dual-pivots.
Stem/Bars: Pretty sure a Nitto stem with Kusuki Winpista bars
Seatpost is one I like: Sugino Fluted/Graduated SP-KC
Other: Specialized 2-sided SPD, Specialized BG saddle, C-dale bag
Tires: Vittoria Rubino Pro Intrepid PRB Kevlar 3D Compound (a lotta label there)
Wheels gotta go, will get some lighter ones for 8/9/10 and use a spacer.
Chainrings are mixed, 46/36/26, outer 2 will be swapped for 44/34 black.
I'm thinking red housings.
Could be a real climber.

Climbing is one thing, descending another, so I PM'd on those calipers. I see the colors of this are Army Strong. I'll need to get a star decal...

Freshly cleaned! Univega Competizione with original Suntour drive chain but replaced wheelset with Bontrager RXL 10 speed. Shifting is much smoother! Saddle is a Prologo Nago Evo.
Hope I don't anger any C&V diehards ...

Haven't posted one of these in quite a while. I just finished it for a friend. His wife wanted me to take it to the landfill. Plenty of patina. I was with Charlie in 1987 when we walked into the Bicycle Post in Greenville NC to buy Ironman bikes. Charlie knew exactly what he wanted, $698 plus tax. They gave him $25 credit for his 600EX pedals on trade for the Looks you see in the photo. I got sticker shock and bought a Trek 510. The Ironman Master hung in his garage through two moves and no riding. I kept after him, and finally convinced him I could "clean it up a little." He was dead set against repaint and new decals, wanted it like he bought it.
He ran Boston last year, missed the bombs by about an hour. Then he went the Lance route and got testicular cancer, from which he is now in remission, as of March, and he's back up to running 3-4 miles 4x week. We ran together on a team back in the 80's, wearing Asics colors. I've had the bike for about a year; he brought it to me by boat at a triathlon. His wife wanted it in a landfill.
In 1986, we co-founded the Fiesta Biathlon (run 5K, ride 15miles, eat a Mexican meal) and this year is the 28th running. For the first time, we plan to team up, with him running, and I'll do the wheel work (since he "doesn't have a bike." I plan to rack this and ride it. He won't be showing up until about 30 minutes before the race, so he'll just suit up, run warmups, and go. I'll simply use his bike and see if he figures it out by the time I get back. The 3rd leg, we'll do together, like dozens of years before. Should be fun. I also forgot how fun these are to build.

Took the honey Brooks B17S and Nitto Noodle handlebars from the '83 Raleigh Gran Tour and put them on another bike and put the original Cinelli handlebars back on along with a Fizik Vitesse seat, I hope to put a black B17S on there on day and some nicer bar tape. Lastly, a set of hammered fenders at some point.
