What a great thread. I just spent an hour looking through some of these pictures. I am new to to cycling and I am still searching for my first road bike, however as a child I remember an uncle had some road bikes, and I was amazed by them. As a child I found the drop bars some amazing for some reason. These pictures remind me so much of those bicycles my uncle had.
This is not an expensive way to have a little fun, and we geek about a lot of stuff.
Not a bad apple in our bunch, except me, but someone has to be it.
You can save a lot of time and money figuring out what you want from the advice here.
And then you will still fine-tune your approach. Good on you.

Rides lighter than it weighs out. I think the geometry balances well, if that makes any sense.
Not as much nostalgia for the friction as an acceptance of the package, knowing it's not my daily/go-to bike, but one for the experience of, say, 75 miles in the mountains on a smooth friction triple...
That being said, the Bob Jackson is an indexed DA 3x6; my Titan is a fragile 120mm, as is my Raleigh International, so I don't mess with any forced expansion; and my Centurion Comp TA won't accept indexed shifters due to the mounts being the older Shimano style.

Back in September, I cleaned up a neglected Bridgestone T700 and put on new tires, cables, handlebar tape and pedals to keep it in line with the original look.

Wow! That cleaned up nicely. And, with minimal badging and decals it is uncluttered looking and rather elegant.

Not sure if this is classic but I picked it up as a complete bike for $10 on Craigslist. After stripping the frame and replacing everything with parts I already had on hand it has become a really fun ride.

I'd been saving some Centaur stuff I got from @bigbossman, and had a hankering to do the 2/3 x 10 downtube thing with Campagnolo since I saw @thirdgenbird do it a few years ago.

Cinelli 70mm stem, 64-42 bars. @stevewhitlatch
Formula/Velocity Aerohead wheels. @drewellison
Centaur FD/RD/calipers/triple crankset. @bigbossman
Record bar ends converted to indexing downtube shifters. @nesteel
Chorus aero brake levers. @speedevil
Used Fizik wrap, Elite cages, Prologo saddle on a Ritchey WCS seat post.

Thanks, Grady. Shakedown ride = dead quiet, shifters dead accurate.
Currently on schedule to ride it across Wisconsin with @hodgykins, LaCrosse to Green Bay, one-day shot/225 miles. Not sure if the bars/hoods will be right, so I may go zero-setback on the post to give me a bit more reach, and for the ride alone, may roll those bars upwards a bit and move the brake levers up. Unsightly, I know, but for 225 miles, I need max comfort on the hoods....plus I think I'm going to have to go with some padding up there, to which you can relate.

After I stripped it back down to just the frame and fork and thouroghly cleaned it I swapped out the brakes, headset,seatpost,collar nut,added a chain tensioner so I don't depend on a magic gear,painted the chainring,top cap, and stem.

This is my old frame (‘85 Fuso) with Athena 11 speed and friction DT shifters, works a treat. 3T Status stem with some generic bars and Kinlin TB25 laced to WI silver hubs on Veloflex Carbon tubs. I replaced the Athena ergos with Record brake levers which you can see in the picture by the water, still need to install a Cinelli XA stem and Cinelli criterium bars.

Hooked up the derailleurs on the Frejus yesterday. Now it's just waiting for dry streets for a spin around the block. The wheel is all the way back in the dropouts. I'm sure I'll need to nudge it forward a bit. Still, I'm skeptical it will ever be an awesome shifter.
And the Griffon is starting to look like a bike. Wheels are laced and trued, the Veloflex Vlaanderen fit (whew!). Looks like the SunTour Superbe derailleur won't have any trouble covering the 13-26 7sp freewheel. Just need a bottom bracket spindle and another couple hours of work:

Can't show you a pic yet, something about points.
My first post (wheee!). Doing this here instead of the designated intro thread because 1) nonconformist, and 2) "BIKE FORUMS" feels awfully unwieldy and intimidatingly vast, and I joined for the specific purpose of gaining insight & (hopefully) assistance with this new project of mine: a gold & chrome 1964 AMF Hercules that somehow ended up in the back of my car when I left Goodwill yesterday.
Full disclosure: I haven't been on a bicycle in 10+ years. But I do enjoy tinkering, and disposing of income, and shiny mid-century design. The chrome alone was enough for me to pull out my phone and do the due diligence, and the $30 price tag made it done deal. A couple of new tires and a replacement shift control later (both ordered and on the way), and she'll be ready to ride.
Yeah, I know; it's been awhile. But from what I hear, it's just like riding a bike.
