Hurricane Irene
All,
We have quite a few C&Vers in the path of the storm. I don't know you all by name/handle, a few I do however. I bet there's a lot of us who'd be happy to know how you're doing and when you're out of danger. Not trying to be intrusive, just concerned. Good luck and Godspeed with your preparation for and riding out of the storm. |
Check out this blog for up to date information on the hurricane

I'm here in DC. With the recent earthquake and now the hurricane, all I gotta say is thank god it isn't a snow flurry, that is what really sets off the panic around here.
|
Thanks guys...
The wife and I are going to head out 300 miles westward form Virginia Beach with our two cats. Wish us luck as my wife is currently 37 weeks pregnant with our first child. Others around here are buying their booze for their "Hurricane Parties" but quite frankly, I'm more than just a little bit freaked out. |
I am more concerned with keeping the 5-12" of rain they are calling for out of my basement, and with the storms last weekend, my roof has developed a leak. Its going to be a busy saturday!
|
Should be a busy weekend. Lots of wind and rain predicted here, sustained winds 50-75 for a few hours, 5" of rain.
Looks like the Kitty Hawk area will catch it the worst, for wind. Problem for most of NC coast is the inland push of water, subsequent flooding. VA Beach should be OK, as the coastline tilts back in. Problem there will be flooding, too. If I were a betting man, I'd say the Eastern Shore of MD, Delaware beaches, Atlantic City (may need a good scrubbing), Philly and NYC are not going to like this storm. Looks like it tilted east about 1-2 degrees last night. Everyone stay safe, and watch out for flooded streets and roads. They are the #1 killer in these events. Of course, after that, I'll be busy handling claims. Not only the real ones, but the imagined and the outright fraud. Predator roofers have already been in the area since April. |
You guys that live in the area of the Hurricane's path, should get prepared. Your shutters should be in place, and get extra food and water and generators ready. Those that are told to evacuate should. It's not the Hurricanes wind force that you should be afraid of, it's all the Tornados that spawned at the outer bands.

We were on Long Island for the summer, only moving back to NJ this week. Since I commute by bicycle and train I can get to my job from either house. And there's still a bunch of stuff to do, out at the Long Island house. So I was thinking of going there for the weekend. Is that totally insane? The hurricane should be there Sunday afternoon.

Very thoughtful of you Khatfull. Here on Cape Cod, my main concern is trees since my wife and I live on fairly high ground. "High" for the Cape. I reluctantly cut down two large pitch pines 2 years ago, sad because they were beautiful trees, but we still have a few that are within striking distance of the house. That said, it looks like the major metropolitan cites along the east coast are in for some heavy stuff. I wish them well.
Unless the thing takes a slight turn to the east, I think we'll mostly dodge a bullet, but who knows. And, thanks. Off topic but, I've been meaning to ask you; HOW IS YOUR FOOT ? |
He isn't a C&Ver but my Brother bugged out from Havelock NC in his RV last night.
I do hope all our friends in Irene's path are safely buttoned up or leaving. |

I think it's the perfect opportunity for a century ride. How many people have done a Hurricane Century?

Just west of Boston. Today's commute from Attleboro into RI was easy but humi-i-i-i-i-d. The test will be Sunday. If the power goes out we might get a flooded basement from rain runoff. We could have some trees or branches come down, just hav eto hope they don't land on anything significant.

I've only been at the beach for the pre-landfall of one hurricane, Georges back around '98 or so. I went to bed around midnight with the wind a constant 35 mph and the water still at normal levels (I was on the bay side of the island). I woke up about 6am, and the water was already up to the last stair leading into our cottage. I was glad I had parked my car on the highest ground in the parking lot, for had I parked it right outside my door it would have been flooded and we would have been stuck. We skedaddled as soon as they reoponed the bridges to get off the island @ 7am. If you are on low ground, the water is what will get you. Storm surge there was IIRC over 20 feet.

The NOAA forecast for Cape Lookout:

Thanks for asking and not to detract from this thread but it's back to 97% or so. I still feel a tad of twinge in the 4th toe when I roll forward when walking. But that toe is the only thing left with a tad of swelling and I'm mostly completely mobile without hindrance. I still try to keep it up at night as much as possible. In fact, I hope to hit the bike tonight!

I'm doing the D2R2 ride in Western Mass tomorrow with a small group of Boston-based people I know... originally we were going to camp tonight and tomorrow night, but all DCR campsites are closed as of tomorrow. So we're still camping out tonight, but then heading back to Boston tomorrow evening after the ride. I hope the wind doesn't start picking up tomorrow!

They have issued a mandatory evacuation for our county ( Cape May) today starting at 8am, I am staying with my wife and our 14 pets. The county started a wide spread panic yesterday with some of the comments from officials so getting fuel and supplies is almost impossible at this point. We are stocked up on food and most supplies needed to deal with power outages for a few days, flooding won't be a issue for us but the wind maybe.

good luck to all in jersey - especially down the shore - its gonna be ugly
|
the storm last sunday brought about 6 inches of rain into my c&v house. I spent this past monday fixing a few issues including holes in my houses foundation and adding some gutters and a downspout. I hate my house.
Anyway, I'm hoping that it holds up a little bit better this weekend or I'm going to be playing in muddy water in my basement again. |
