Older Schwinn bike,
In decent shape

Both bikes need a little TLC
Of course, I was primarily interested in the Hercules, but if the price of admission meant taking a bike I'd either flip or give away, so be it! The Herc was free after all! Message sent. Message received from seller this AM and I'm taking a drive to PA.

As it turns out the rear hub has been replaced with a Shimano 3-speed at some point in its life and appears to have lead a somewhat rough life since the fenders are a little bent and scratched up. Overall, though given the bicycle appears to be a Pre-Raleigh model, I suppose it's not in too bad of shape for a 50 year old bike.

Can someone confirm that this is a Pre-Raleigh bicycle? Also, how can I determine the age of this bike? Does anyone know of a serial registry for Hercules bikes?

The serial number are on the rear dropout. Unfortunately Hercules serial number are meaningless . Hercules was sold to Tube Industries in the 1940s. TI bought out Raleigh in the 1950s so pre Raleigh is pretty meaningless. The 1930s were the heyday for Herc . They were the biggest bicycle manufacturer in the world at that time. Your bike looks like a 'New Yorker' aimed at the US market in the 1950s .

I wouldn't say that. The pre-Raleighs were completely different bikes. After 1960, Hercs were simply Nottingham style light roadsters and Hercules badges with no connection to their Birmingham heritage.

Would you believe: I have a Hercules wheel, dated 1954 (B type 4) that I don't need. It's a complete wheel, with a Dunlop rim. Where are you located?

Tube Industries made changes to what was a failing company. Hercules was one of many great bicycle makers that couldn't cope with the changing times after WW2. Unfortunately TI were the last thing needed to improve the situation. T I buying Raleigh 10 years later was the final nail in the coffin for Raleigh and mass produced bicycles in Britain.
Pre or early TI Hercs still had some of the quality but it was not the same.
Don't get me wrong, I have two TI Hercs but they require considerable more TLC than the older workhorse pre WW2 bikes - but it is something I enjoy doing.
