This thread has been very educational. All it did, though, was validate my decision to abandon ebay and Paypal.

Shill bidding? I don't see what's wrong with proxy bidding so long as the proxy pays. A couple of years ago I had a NOS Tommasini Airfork that I put up on eBay. I started the auction at $75, it quickly went up to $190 and stayed there all week. In the last few seconds, the bidding went to over $400. As it turns out the buyer was a proxy located in Vancouver, he was bidding on behalf of people in Hong Kong. The guy paid immediately, and that was that. What's the problem?

If the moderation staff has to come back into this thread once more to clean up any more childish bickering, this whole thread will go right in the digital round file, and there will be other repercussions.

Just stop.

If all goes according to plan, proxy bidding can work fine for both buyer and seller. However, if you study page four of this thread you'll see what can go horribly wrong

It's a case of paying your money and taking your chances. I'm not interested in taking chances with a middleman after my less-than-stellar experience with a proxy.

Kurt - very interesting list! There are a couple-three handles on there that surprised me, but as you said, the list was compiled from many sources. I've had fantastic dealings with a few on that list, but it just proves that everyone has different standards and probably better/worse shipping options!

Shill bidding is not proxy bidding.

Proxy bidding is having someone enter bids on your behalf - nothing more, nothing less.

Shill bidding is a crime. It is fraud.

There is a third situation being discussed herein that is incorrectly being called "proxy bidding" but is neither of the above and it should not be called "proxy bidding". I'll call it third party buying or agency buying. This is not illegal but is (apparently) not being handled properly by the agent or by ebay.

I agree that it's fraud, and I assume shill bidding is spelled out somewhere as a crime. But it was interesting to me that in the case I testified in, the DOJ prosecuted them on wire fraud and mail fraud, both felonies.

I missed it too...just saw the additions to the banned list. I didn't look at this thread until after the implosion, whatever it was.

FYI - I've done business with a Japanese proxy service on 4 auctions and I hope they win on every auction I ever have. They pay next day and leave feedback quickly.

That's definitely the best side of it - oh, yeah! Bid really high on a early 80s Schwinn Voyageur ($330). In the end, however, the third-party part of it really worked out in such a way I had no recourse whatsoever if the item was damage in shipping from the third party to the buyer.

I missed the CEP, too. I think - as others have stated - this thread has put out some good information on balance, so I hope it doesn't get locked down.

As a long time ebayer with a 550+ 100% positive feedback I dont doubt that shill bidding goes on...But I also know as a frequent seller that it is not unusual to see an item I'm selling double or triple in price in the last 30 seconds or less. The price doubling is actually quite normal, and expected.
There are ALOT of programs / services that will snipe for you in the last few seconds.

I've also had ALOT of buyers flake after winning an auction & not paying. Ebay has slanted its process to the buyers advantage in the last few years to the point that you cannot leave a negative feedback for a buyer... THIS is the main culprit behind prices going up then you get a second chance offer. I bet most of them are from buyers not paying than anything else.

Caveat Emptor...not on ebay anymore, just dont pay

I can guarantee that this is NOT a case of shill bidding. All of the top bidders are purchasing assistants that cater to the Asian market and place proxy bids for individuals. I know this from the buyers profiles and the feedback numbers. I spoke to one of them after they had purchased a number of my items. They explained that it has happened quite often that they will receive various proxy bids and therefore a first bid might represent one buyer and a second one another buyer. This will make it appear that they are bidding against themselves. The round number bids reflect the way that the buying assistants collect the bids. The standard "default" setting ensures that all their bids are round numbers unless the bidder makes a conscious decision to insert a different number and this then requires quite a complex modification of their standard bid collection procedure.

I've sold to them multiple times in the past too. They don't just bid on bicycle parts, they bid on everything for their customers (baby carriers, cloth diapers, clothes etc). They have always been really nice to sell to, pretty no-nonsense buyers.
