1989, I guess... Centurion Iron Man Expert (black) equipped with original Shimano SunTour GPX components.
Have been out of the saddle for quite awhile now. Getting back into it. Like my steel bike, while so many others ride carbon fiber.
Need to do some upgrades. I still have the original brake lever hoods and they are quite sticky. What equivalent models should I be looking for on Amazon to replace them. I'm looking for something in black that will be kind to a healthy 44 year old's hands. Something a little ergonomic.
Also, I will do some of my own research, but does anyone know of some good bicycle computer components that I can buy that will blue with my smartphone, an Android, instead of getting a closed system bicycle computer with its own screen and such.

Those hoods look pretty far gone, and do not believe that there are replacements out there that will fit. Shimano R400 and R600 levers can be found on eBay and they are fairly contemporary, black, and will work with your calipers. Same with several models of Tektro lever.

I agree with the good Dr, some newer levers would be the thing, I have a bike with the Tektro levers I do like running them as they are wider than the GPX levers so if your riding on the hoods they are a bit more comfy! And they are easier to use on the hoods to brake.

Cleaning-wise, the "magic eraser" cleaner, with simple dish detergent, works fairly well. As others have said, they can clean up with harsher chemicals, but will remain sticky. I've treated clean but sticky hoods with Armor-all, with limited success, but it's just chemical on top of chemical.
Easier to find replacement levers/hoods, sometimes available on eBay, but stay clear of the "NOS" high-priced vendors. Some of the "NOS" levers have the grey hoods, which seem to be easier to clean.
Again, per others, much easier to go with something like Soma or Tektro or TRP or even some nice Shimano BL400's if you can find them. Budget-wise, even easier to find a set of 105 levers/hoods, DiaCompe's, or Modolos.
If the hoods are not torn, I'm always game for a set of levers/hoods. "Saving" them is a nice little project that gets my mind off of other things.

I have the same problem with the 600 EX group on my 87 Super Sport.

Many Garmin models will bluetooth with your smart phone, especially the newer compact models with 2-digit model numbers.
The Varia lighting system will also bluetooth with your smart phone, adjust the headlight automatically for speed, time of day, and light conditions. I believe the newer taillight systems will incorporate the rear-facing radar that Garmin offers, as well.
Probably a little much for an Ironman, but my experience with Garmin is good, for what it's worth.

Thanks Mark! I really don't think it is there. It will match the hubs then. Both have the black band missing. I might get some black tape and just wrap it all back down the road. Too much picky detail right now. Really just want to do a temp build and ride it alittle before striping. Have to decide between paint, powder oat and colour.

The 700c wheel set got fresh grease. Everything was good in there but was on the verge of heat burn. Hubs HB 6207 JJ
Freewheel 6 speed 12-24 6208
Rim strips are velox 16mm which look too big. Any one see smaller strips in theirs?

No problems with the narrower but thicker cloth tape, just wide enough to cover the nipple holes. The one time I've had the tire off for a patch or tube swap the tube looked fine, so the cloth tape appears to support the tube well enough. Just enough adhesive to keep it from shifting.
IIRC, the theory behind Schwalbe's thin but wide rim strip is to be sure the strip can't shift and expose the nipple holes.

Since a lot of the Ironman came equipped with Shimano 600 parts, do any of you have a brake used for parts? I need a cable adjuster for the rear brake.

I've moved completely away from Velox tape- in fact, any cloth tape. Seen too many rims with rusted inner eyelets from tape that got wet and never really dried. Now I use two wraps of Captan tape- inexpensive, ages well, easy to remove, very pliable, and makes it much easier to mount tires.

Captan tape is mostly used in electrical device manufacturing. I get mine from eBay in 17mm width for about $5-7 per roll; one roll is good for about 8-10 wheels.
I always sleep better at night knowing the dielectric value of my rim tape...
