Cool looking. It was indexing slightly. Then I rebuilt it and all was good. Then it loosened up on a ride. I got it tighter. Now it is indexing again. It is resting for now. I will rebuild it sometime and leave out the bearing retainers.

I meant to post here but accidentally posted on the Ironman info thread:
We know all "known" Ironman were 68 bb shell width, but what about spindle length? The Carbon was 113. I think on my '86 I used a 112. And boy I wished I had measured my recently reinstalled '87 expert OEM spindle.

My 86' IM and my 84' Comp TA are 113 mm . The Comp TA "track bike" is 109mm .

All weights measured with everything removed, including headset cups, crown race, seat binder bolt, dropout adjusters, etc. All tubes measured center-to-center.

You'd have to have the identical size frame, same geometry, same lugset, dropouts fork steerer lengths, etc.
I believe the tubing weights are out there and well known.
Tange 1 is sometimes considered closer to Columbus SLX than SL, but I think Tange Prestige would be a better match.
A lot of it has to do with what frame builders decide to use. I certainly can't tell the difference between Tange 1, Tange 2, Columbus SLX or Columbus SLX, or probably Tange Prestige, for that matter.
Tange 2, for a 58cm frame, is 2.2 oz heavier than Tange 1, but that's a more relaxed geometry (Lemans RS) than an Ironman, plus the eyelets, so go figure.
Frame builders go with what they think will work the best in the design they have in mind, lugs they've chosen, and the ability to braze or TIG the joints. Some tubing is a lot easier to work with, the French Excelle tubing, for example, was a favorite of several builders.
I've had SLX frames that were definitely heavier than Ironman frames of the same size. Can't say why, though. Columbus Life tubing is used in some remarkable modern frames, just as a few custom builders out there are building 16lb bikes with lugs and all the goodies.
The synergy of the build is still front and center, once you get to turning a crank and moving down the road.

'87 Expert here. I built this as a gift to myself for graduating college. I have a thing for red/white, and coveted an Ironman
after drooling over them for years. Being on a limited budget, I was thrilled to score the frame set
for a very reasonable price. As happy as I am with the look of this bike, the ride is even better! Thanks to those who have kept this

Of course ultimately it doesn't make a huge difference, because as we know, fit and fitness are really more important. The fact is at my fitness level, I can't tell the difference between my Ironman at 20 lbs and a sub 20 LB bike.
The reason I'm interested is because bitd when I was good, I had a pinarello Columbus SL tubed bike. And right now I have the chance to make my '86 Ironman identical, down to the last components...well except the braze on front derailleur tab.
But like I said ultimately I need to lose 40lbs to have a fair comparison.
