I'm still waiting on a crank, and chainrings for the black Turbo. Also the rest of the original headset. Even though I prefer shiny over murdered out, I'm still excited to see how it turns out.

Probably not polite to ask, but how why the IM sticky reappears? AND RT vanishes at the same time? Some kind of sacrifice?

The '85 Ironman came with Shimano 600. However it was Not SiS.

I held off getting an Ironman. But, considering myself a friend of Robbie, I succumbed to a frameset, back in '19. '89 Expert. Red/white fade.
I have never been a fan of red bikes. But that was what was available. I brought it home and built it up(imperfectly. It was the last of the framesets to come this way, and I used what I had around). It didn't live up to the hype, IMO, and it has been relegated to the frameset stash.
Now that Robbie has been perma-banned, I'm thinking about giving it another go. But I can't stand the paint job-- not just the red, none of it. The graphics just rub me the wrong way. I do like that it has a unicrown fork. With a re-paint, it stands a chance of being ridden.
I've come here to ask for your blessings.
That is all

Go for it seedsbelize
i hope to find a '86 frame for my son so I can swap frames, take his '88 and paint it solid with panels for myself.

Does anybody have the pic of the Robbietunes on the down tube bike? The white one. Not the "Not your fathers IM" which was nice but my introduction to the IM was that white bike.

Do it, do it.
Whatever makes you feel better about riding. I'm pretty conservative myself but Ironman allows me to let go sometimes. And when I run across a modern bike I actually kinda relish in the Ironmans non-conformity.
Personally, I feel the '86 and '87 masters fork are really cool. Also I feel the masters frames are better than the experts frame...there is a difference in lugs too. Get a master Ironman before you give up completely.
I Know Ironman aren't for everyone and it's not a magic carpet. But for the price it's hard to beat the ride. But You don't have to take my word for it, check this out.

Sounds like a lot of work to ruin a bike you don't like. Why not just sell it and get something you do like? I don't know what color you want to re-paint it to (Please don't tell me it's flat black), but I can guarantee you will ruin the resale value. Now you'll be stuck with a frame you don't like.

Next on the build queue

I’ve got a few framesets that have been hanging in the shed for years now, so I’ve decided I need to build these up and get them out the door.

First up is a 1987 MV IM, probably one size too big for me, although I could make it work in a pinch.

It looks like I cleaned up the frameset before I put it on a peg, so that’s nice. A few scratches but no dings, so it looks good from five feet or so.

At some point I donated the original 105 hubs to another project, but I managed to find a replacement set on CL last year (from a fellow BF CVer). I laced up the wheels this weekend with what I assume are the original rims: gold anodized Araya. Those tires are Conti Gatorskins, 700x28, that I was pleasantly surprised to see fit. They measure at 25-26mm on the skinny rims, so that may help.

It looks like I have almost all of the stock components. Saddle is gone, but I have another white one in a bin to use. I have no idea what handlebar would be stock, but I probably still have it in my collection (pile). Anyone know?

Cool bike.
The stock rims for the'87 MV were wolber Alpine. The gold araya rims were original to the '85 and some early '86.
The Stock bars were Nitto B15.

Look at my country of residence. What you suggest can't be done. I already can't sell it. I am at the end of the tunnel here. Bikes and frames come in and never leave. And it can't be sold. I'm a giant with my 60cm bikes. Everyone else rides 54. Or 52, or 49.

Ah, interesting.

I also have an ‘85(?) IM in the queue, and that’s where those rims must have come from. I’m wondering if the original rims ended up with the original hubs. Sigh.

I do have a pair of Wolber rims, but the wrong hole count. Since the ‘85 will not be stock, I think I’ll leave things as is. I really should asked before lacing the wheels.

And thanks for the handlebar ID, I did find those in the pile, with a note that they belonged to this bike. Wish I had done that with the rims . . .
