I've never figured out what the lower part of those bars is for. Awful close to the knees.

Those are cool, and when I get a 89 CIM road bike, I'm putting some of those on it. They were designed to put you in a more aerodynamic position on solo breakaways. Just hold on to the lower part. Greg Lemond used them for a while after the success of his 89 come from behind TDF win using some scott aero bar attechments. These were also originally made by scott.

From the 1991 May/June Cycling World magazine. Notic how the Aussie bikes are marketed as the triathlon models rather than Ironman. Also, you can see how the Carbon R fork is the sloping crown, so it looks like the Australian models are slightly different to the American ones.

That is way cool Quang. Shows you can run about any group on the Carbon-R, and be "right there."
That being said, I think the tricolor group is about perfect, and since I got some tires like yours, it's dead on.

The only thing that would tempt me to change that Carbon-R would be a nearly NOS 9-sp DA group, including hubs.
Don't think it would be worth it. I'm going to send you a PM and get your thoughts on another frame, by the way.

Any chance you can get some large-size scans up somewhere? I'd love to see the forks on the steel Triathlon, compare it to seypat's.

The Triathlon Master frames had welded uni crown forks. These are two frames that passed through my hands. The groupset on the Carbon R came off this.


And the other one which was a friend has now.

Yep, both original paint. The white one has a lovely purple pearl sheen on top of it. @RobbieTunes can tell you the date on the white Master as he's got the groupset off it.

Cant recall all the blue frame's exact year, but it'll be about the same as the white one. Dave Scott actually was in Sydney, Australia the other year and I was considering getting the Carbon-R signed. The frames were never marketed as Dave Scott Ironmans here though.

My beautiful daughter and 11 month old grandaughter came down and spent most of Saturday and Sunday with me ,my wife, and my 17 month old daughter. We went to see my 9 yr old and 11 yr old grandsons play their basketball games. It was fun family time all weekend. So No bike hill repeats or long run as scheduled.
However today I did the hill repeats on my Miami Vice. I originally said they were 1/4 mile hills, but we measured in the car Saturday and they were 1/2 mile and my cateye cyclemeter confirmed 1/2 mile today.
I did 5 hill repeats (laps) instead of 10,as they were 1/2 not 1/4 mile. The fastest I reached was 37 mph , I wasn't trying and just happen to look down.
WOW! So much fun on the MV set up as a road bike (no aerobars). It's mostly stock except for the wheels are off R.T.s 87 yellow two tone master. Those Vittoria zaffiro tires make a huge difference when climbing. The MV was so stable and solid. And that front derailleur shifts like butter. Using this CIM on this workout would convince anyone to get one. Fantastic ride and bike.
Here's a pic. As loud as the 80s paint job is, it still under states how good this bike really is.
Sidenote: Unlike my 88 yellow fade, absolutely no walmart accessories.

For comparisons sake here's my 88 yellow fade with full,walmart accessories. I named this bike maverick because it vintage, modern, and about a year ago when I was considering buying it, I watched Top Gun for the first time then watched a hundred times after. That's right I didn't see that move til almost 30 yrs later.
The thing that I love the most about this bike is it had less than 350 miles on it before I got it. So I know where every scratch or scrape is from (well,it doesn't have any now,but you know what I mean). Only RT'S 89 ironman has less miles when acquired.
It has 9 speed ultegra. But the best part is walmart wrap,cable housing, cages,saddle bag, mini frame pump and wireless cyclemeter. It's all bell.
Currently I'm still in my 2 month base phase. Starting in March I'll start my strength base phase. Which means I'll be doing that hill repeat workout once a week, adding 1 lap each week for 8 weeks. And the next time I do I'll be on this one.
My wife and family make life grand and the thought of Spring makes me feel good. I love life.
Sidenote: RT suggested walmart cables to someone concerned with bike budget (who isn't) and I took it to another level. So once again I both Blame and Thank RobbieTunes.

Really nice setups. A 54cm is such a nice balance of dimensions. Spare and tight.


I don't think Bell wrap/housing/bag/cages hurts this a bit. I rather like the cages. I use those bags all the time, when I want tools and food on a long solos.
Perfect wheels and tires for this build, and the silver/polished components give it a nice balance. Excellent group, last pretty Shimano crankset.

Decided to weigh my bikes. I weighed them without pedals, cages, bags, lights, Garmin, etc, and I also weighed them with all that stuff. They were really not that much lighter than the OEM setups. Kind of wonder why I went to the trouble. I may very well switch the red/white one from 5700 to DT shifters and regular brake levers.

Red/White 1986 Ironman classic: 20.08 lbs. Most likely due to the 5700 STI's, long-cage RD and wide-range 12-29 cassette. I recently went to heavier tires 365g/each tubular clinchers. It's my go-to bike, and fully loaded as I ride it, 22.12 lbs.



Yellow/White 1987 Ironman Master: 18.98 lbs. Also running 365g tubular clinchers. Downtube DA7800 shifters and Modolo brake levers are, I'm sure, lighter than 5700 STI's. Also has a short-cage RD and a much lighter 12-25 cassette. That's likely the difference with the red one. It's my hard workout bike, and fully loaded, as I ride it, 20.28 lbs.


Miami Vice 1987 Ironman Expert: 19.70 lbs. This bike is on clinchers and runs DT shifters as well, but the 8-sp cassette is likely heavier than many 10-sp cassettes, and I'm sure the brake levers are heavier (Dia Compe) than the Modolos. The Selle Italia Tri-Matic saddle would be the rest of the difference over the Prologo on the lighter Master. I only ride it on weekends, and fully loaded, ready to roll, it's 21.18 lbs.



Centurion Carbon-R: 17.77 lbs. I pretty much expected it to be light. It has a heavy saddle, relative to the Ironman bikes, but it could easily be sub-17 with a modern crankset, carbon seatpost, and modern saddle. This is fair-weather, impress the carbon cowboys bike, and ride ready at 19.02 lbs.



For comparison, I also weighed my Columbus SLX D'Arienzo, basically a re-badged Basso: 19.37 lbs, with tubulars. With a spare tire in Henry III's long bag, and all the fixings, 21.17 lbs. By far, the major weight factor is the Suntour GPX group, which is solid, but that BB, crankset, and hubs are not super light by any means. It was lighter with a Campy compact Centaur 2x10 on it, with modern wheels. No need for a picture of the bike, as the only difference from any earlier pics is Henry's cool tubular bag.




Also by comparison, this 1998 Bianchi Trofeo, triple, is 27 lbs. Granted, it's has a heavy crankset/bb, saddle, pedals, and wheelset, but man, that's heavy. Still, if it was a 56cm, I'd change the FD to a compact double, along with a modern compact double crankset, stay with the long-cage rear, and use it with racks and/or fenders. Ton's of clearance, and the frame can't be that much heaver than most C&V steel. Can it? Off topic, but the guy who had this got my 16.86 lb Felt. I think he will notice a difference.

i like it, I use to have a newer trek 520 touring bike. I used mtb bar ends that ended up being similar to this. I like more options for my hands on longer rides.

I was getting ready to weigh mine next week and see how much traffic we could generate on this thread. I guess since we're all on Ironman we're not overly concerned with weight. However I don't think markwesti is allowed to play cause he's on the wagon (banned from weighing his bikes).
I think we should weigh them as ridden. Only exceptions cages,bags,pump,lights...basically all accessories. But you gotta leave usual saddle and pedals. In other words don't swap components to make them lighter. Weigh what you have; stock, modern, antique or electronic. What cha think?
Anybody know where I can get a inexpensive scale? Didn't see any at harbor freight and walmart had 19 dollar fish scale. Maybe a luggage scale?

That's why I weighed mine both ways. I consider "naked" weights on bikes to be relative only to other bikes (or for sales assistance....). I consider my "ride ready" weight to be everything except water bottles, ready to pedal. That's why I included Garmin, brackets, the filled seat bags, etc.

I got a great digital scale from China for about $6 delivered. It's been accurate so far. If the battery is new, it works great. It deviates a few hundreths once in a while if I weigh the same bike 2-3 times in a row. It's also very close to my digital postage scale.

I may look into those, as I ride the drops until my hands can't take it. More real estate would be good.

tex , on the wagon ? How did you know ? Well as soon as I'm over this cold I'm going to have a good talk with my buddy Jack Daniels .
Anyhow I weighed my bike a few times a while back , forgot to write it down . As of right now it weighs 22.6 and that's with a empty tool bag .
One of these days I'll change the back drop . I changed a few things since new to me , like tubulars , corn cob free wheel , Shimano brake levers Tektro calipers , seat post . I don't think the bike is any lighter .

Hi all, haven't posted for a while. 'had a gall bladder removed (pretty bad one) and have been off the bike about two months! Now 'am "back in the saddle again". (Sorry, couldn't resist). To continue the folly, here's my MV and my buddy Clem today. Yep, I know; 'still have the 27" rims and cranks from an '83 Panasonic Sport Deluxe. Clem gives me a ration of **** about it.
