I was in wlmart and found this helmet, looks like it'll match the Miami Vice...problem is it's youth size. Fits me though.
Once I get me a 54cm '85 Ironman, my plan is to start getting shoes and helmets matching each of my Ironman bikes.
But first, still in search of the '85. When I find it, I'll get it down to frame, then rebuild with ultra modern wireless, "road bike" (no Aero bars) components.

There were also Ironman helmets; I've had a couple. You may want to look for those. Not expensive, either.

We now have it verified that tex is a humble, down to earth person. There is no way a person with a big head could wear a youth helmet.

You beat me to it. I wish I could say it was all brain but my decisions (historically) have proven otherwise. For reference and credence, I wear size small in Giro helmets the same exact size as you RT.

In other news, I'm feeling very fit currently. I started off at 196 pounds and am down to 183 with zero dieting. My goal to get down to 175 by July's Olympic distance triathlon and 165 by Octobers half Ironman race. Apparently I'll do anything to lose the weight EXCEPT diet. And contrary to C-Cats Sage advice, I haven't given up Sugar...yet. But that day will probably come (excluding Dr Pepper on weekends).
But irregardless of my weight, I'm feeling good, strong and my better self again. Later Irongents.

Nearly-NOS 1988 Master, purple haze

I have a “Nearly-NOS” 1988 Centurion Dave Scott Master. I say nearly-NOS because the bike is an absolutely mint garage queen with nearly no miles on it. My bike matches RobbieTunes’ “Ironman Information Thread” components listing perfectly, the only things that aren’t original to the bike are the bar tape and cables. Even the tires are original in perfect rideable condition, they still have the rubber mold injection “hairs” on them! The brake calipers still have the rubber grommet thingies, and it has the original turbo saddle too!

I have this cross posted in the C&V appraisals too

Thanks RobbieTunes! That means a lot! Your Ironman Information thread has been invaluable to me, it made me seek an IM out, and then helped me figure out what I had once I got one!

This is 56cm, I just wish it were just a bit taller. I plan on passing this one on to another member if possible, please let me know if you can think of anyone who may be interested and shoot me a PM

That's not a 56cm (per Ironman measuring) looks more like 58 from these pics possibly a 60.

I’m new to Ironman’s. I measured 22” C to C on both seattube and toptube, which made me believe it was 56cm. Would that mean it’s 58cm C to T for the seattube?

Thanks!

Centurion measures them kind of funny.

The size is measured along the seat tube, from the center of the BB to the lower part of that "scallop" on the seat cluster. That looks like a 58cm, but I've been fooled before by photo angles.

Most "58cm" Ironman models are 57cm along the top tube.

One clue on most Ironman models is the location of the pump peg on the back of the head tube.
On 54cm, it's pretty much centered.
On 56cm, it's about 2/3 of the way up.
On 58cm, it's about 3/4 of the way up.

Nice. First time I've seen a current photo of an Ironman with the original tires.

Looks like a 58 -- seems to be the same size as my '89 frame, judging from the frame pump peg. I thought mine was a 56cm until I rechecked with a tape measure that wasn't stretched out.

Must... resist... temptation.

No problem, I'm broke. And have no room for another bike until I get rid of a borrowed recumbent that's been cluttering my living room for a year.

Turns out most of my weight loss was from cutting way back on beer. I quit buying it to keep at home. And I only drink a beer after some group rides, which amounts to maybe 2-3 beers a month. That's down from 2-3 beers a day before the thyroid thing last year.

I'm down from 165 this time last year to 150, and have kept it there all 2019 so far. I'm surprised to still see a little fat around the belly and over the kidneys. I could still get down to 145 if I was really serious, but I'm not planning to do that.

I still use sugar in my coffee, a teaspoon in 2-3 cups a day. But I regard it as fuel. If I use sugar, I'm gonna go for a ride or at least do an hour on the indoor trainer while watching a movie. I've been trying the theory about long, moderate rides/trainer sessions being good for fat burning, and it seems to work.

I've cut back on my hard HIIT sessions (like Tabata type HIIT) to once every other week. Those were brutal and I wasn't giving myself enough recovery and rest time. I was doing those for too long, like up to 30 minutes, and combining with longer, lower effort rides. The main advantage I see from hard interval training is improved recovery after standing to stomp up short, steep climbs for 30-60 seconds. I'm not faster on the climbs. But I'm recovering quicker and don't need to pull over to huff my inhaler or feel like I'm about to barf.

I occasionally have coffee and a couple of donuts at Dunkin's after my two or three weekly PT sessions -- but besides an hour of PT my 6 mile round trip by bike usually turns into interval training sessions with the many short, steep climbs. And unlike most folks in my PT sessions, I'm not taking a leisurely approach, or messing on my phone while doing half-hearted exercise. I'm doing more reps than the therapist calls for, and only 30 seconds between reps. So even with about 600-800 calories in junk carbs, I'm still burning 'em up.

Giving up most beer was easy. With the thyroid problem alcohol felt like my body was being poisoned. I love beer but it doesn't love me anymore. Fickle wench. Seems like I do better with the less hoppy, more malty beers and lower alcohol. Fortunately my favorite microbrewery is run by two friends with completely different tastes in beer. One loves the facepunching tangy-bitter hops -- tasty but something about those gives me sinus headaches and body aches. The other prefers the darker, malty, less hoppy ales. I can drink one or two of those and feel okay. So I've found one that I can enjoy in moderation a couple times a month.

But sugar and coffee still love me, so I return the affection with moderate but enthusiastic indulgence.

First 1,000 on a Ironman

Today marked 1.000 miles on the Purple Haze since I started riding it last December. It was a E-bay find and came with no wheels and Exage components. I kept the triple crank but replaced the steel rings with Sugino 52 38 30 aluminum. The front derailleur is a new 105. I used some Giant wheels & some of the new GP 5000 tires. I had with a 11-28 10 speed Ultegra cassette and a 5600 105 derailleur. The brakes are also Ultegra with Exage levers. Shifters are Dura Ace downtube. The first picture was the E-bay picture the second was before I changed the brakes tires saddle and put the purple bar tape on. I also switched to a 70 mm stem. I guess I need to take a current one.
So far I really like this bike. I find it just as fast as my modern carbon fiber bike and more fun to ride. I have a standard Dura Ace crank and derailleurs I am thinking of switching to and will put the triple on my blue Smoke on the water 89 for Ragbrai. It seems to fit me slightly better and I want to be able to cover any wind/hills we may get into. My granddaughter has been riding her Black Dog Ironman too but unfortunately not much with me as our schedules haven't allowed it lately. Yeah I have rode my carbon bike too this year...about 50 miles and it is in perfect shape. BTW I highly recommend the GP 5000 tires. The Gatorskins in the picture came off after 25 miles. They ride smooth roll easy and stick like glue. So far all I have done is keep them aired up. I have another set ordered for the other Ironman.

88 Master when I got it

Very Nice. Way to make it work for you. I'll tell ya, if my '88 Carbon Ironman ever bites the dust I'll be looking for a '88 Purple Rain to replace my '88.
What size is your other Ironman? If I recall correctly, it's smaller.

A weird thing happened to me on my Wednesday ride, riding my '87 Miami Vice. It's happened before but this time I think I know what may have triggered it. I wonder has this ever happened to any of y'all?
So I'm barreling down the hill at about 40 mph, it gad just started to sprinkle rain, so midway down I thought I should be in the drops, but then I said don't be a p***y and was going back to the aero position when I barely touched the brake lever, which caused me to wobble, scared the mess out if me and my mantra become, you can be a p***y, you can be a p****y.
Ok that has nothing to do with the weird thing that happened to me, but jeez that was something.
Ok back to story. So I get down said hill and it's really getting dark, you literally see the thunderstorm rolling in. So I take off my shades. Immediately, my Ironman feels like it has shrunk. My perspective has completely changed. It feels like I've gone from a 700c wheeled bike to a 24 inched wheeled bike (IDK what the equivalent C tire is). As I've said it's happened before. However it was the fast descent or taking off the shades. I gotta believe it's the removing of the shades as I ride that hills every Wednesday.
Bitd I only wore Oakley shades, the pilot ones for training and the blades for racing. But now I only wear Ironman shades (I think I have at least four different models of them).
So my question is, has thus ever happened to you and do you think it's the shades?
Also maybe RT should use that technique to trick his 56cm to feel smaller and he can keep his current herd, hehe.

In all seriousness it was the weirdest phenomenon, I felt like I was 7 feet tall or that I was riding a kids bike.

Yes. It has been a while, but that sensation of my bike having shrunken is weird. Feels like I'm really close to the road.

I used to get that when I'd switch from contacts to prescription glasses, but I've never had sunglasses give that sensation. I'm shrinking with age, so maybe that offsets the effect

Visual trick. You should try to repeat it under similar conditions on the flats.
