Suntour Superbe cranks best BB mate? How about a Suntour Cyclone BB?

Just throwing this question out there, if anyone has any knowledge on this. I've heard that Suntour Superbe cranks are optimally mated with a Superbe BB, due to slight differences with the spindle. Such a BB is egregiously expensive, if you can find one. Now here's the question:

Would a Cyclone BB like this one on ebay do the trick? I can't find enough info...

Some of what I have found leads me to believe that this is a no-go, as I've seen mention of (some) Cyclone BB spindle(s) having a JIS square taper, and the Superbe BB spindle (at least in some cases) having a 'Campagnolo' taper. I'm confused.

Other than tracking down a Superbe BB, what are my best options, keeping in mind a desire to take full advantage of a set of like-new Superbe cranks (which I have an opportunity to get, but will only pick up if I can solve this little pickle first)...

Doing a little digging, and obviously this is old ground...but the in-depth discussions don't really resolve much! i.e.:

https://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in.../t-335237.html
https://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in.../t-481693.html

Sheldon Brown sez (https://sheldonbrown.com/suntour.html):

A note on Superbe Pro BBs: Sun Tour used an unusual taper for Superbe Pro BBs of the time. The closest match other than a Superbe Pro BB would be Campagnolo square taper, from what I understand. I think this is the approach that Phil Wood recommends. [The taper was smaller than on most other BB axles. Other cranks would bottom out at the inside of the taper; SunTour and Campagnolo cranks would not engage fully with axles of other brands. -- John Allen]
Only ref I've seen to taper on a Cyclone BB indicates JIS. Some have suggested a modern Veloce, which is not uneconomical...

I'm still confused! There's what might work, and then there's what's best (without dropping serious funds on an NOS Superbe Pro BB)...

I use a Campy Veloce square taper BB. Works perfectly and economically.

As someone mentioned, for Superbe cranks, especially the Pro, you need a Superbe bottom bracket. It uses a different taper, as apposed to the JIS standard on all other Suntour cranks. I too have heard of Campag tapers working, but you might want to look around on ebay. There are usually a few Superbe BB up at one time, often though it may be just the axle.

I have a spare sealed cartridge Superbe BB unit. If you're interested, get in touch.

Best,

J

I got beat out for the cranks in any case, though I'll be keeping an eye out for another set in future - nice stuff, and it looks like I might get a Superbe BB if I really need it. Folks really don't seem to quite agree on the necessity of that perfect Superbe/Superbe pairing (a lot do say Campy is just fine), but there does seem to be a consistent line holding that it is slightly different. I saw something about a difference from the typical 2 degree angle somewhere, but can't find that info again. Thanks for the offer afilado - if I'd felt a little bit richer this morning, I'd have taken you up on it, for sure!

I think that Suntour Superbe and Sugino Mighty cranks used the same taper as Campagnolo, but not necessarily the same spindle length. JIS (Cyclone) is not very different from Campy taper, you just might want to use a slightly shorter spindle, since the JIS has a slightly larger spindle end.

I can attest to the standard Suntour BB not working with Campy Veloce. Lined up fine, taper was off.

I'm hoping I can use it with a tricolor crankset, though I think it's 2mm longer than the Shimano.
That's 1mm per side, so it should be ok.
