It's either Paramount J 71 51 or J 71 57....

But as of this morning, it's mine.

I will not bore you with the story. Suffice it to say
it involves Craigslist, a fruitless four hour drive from
here in Sacramento to Merced and back, and one of
my friends here who also has possibly more bicycles
than one person can comfortably ride.

But who am I to judge ?

Very nice! With the Campy cable guides on the top tube for the rear brake cable and the lack of eyelets, it appears to be a P13-9.

What's the serial number on the left rear dropout?

EDIT - Never mind about the serial number. J71xx is September, 1971.

Stan, see title above. The last number is a partial stamp
because it kinda goes off the top curve of the dropout.
Best guess is a 7, could be a 1.

Like I really care at this point.......

Extra points for the bicycle registration sticker.

Great score. What size is it?

My '71 P13-9 has the Campy 649 brake cable clips.

BTW, the Campy side-pull brakes were a $50 option. Somebody went first class when they ordered that bike.

Very nice. I'm of the opinion that '71 was a very good year for Paramounts. Seriously, that's a beautiful bike!

The OP's Paramount appears to be a bit of a transition bike. It has all the hallmarks of the revised 1971+ P13 design (no eyelets, top tube clips instead of braze-ons, 700C clearance), but carries the earlier fork blade bend; indicating that the new blades hadn't arrived yet (or that someone accidentally fitted the wrong blades when putting it in the jig).

Could be that they re-used a pair of blades that had been destined for a 27" bike but cut too short - though that's a big "IF."

EDIT: Pastor Bob's '71 has the earlier fork blades as well.

Reminds me of my March '71 P-13. Your paint looks to be in nearly perfect condition. Great find!

Stan's Kool Yellow #H7106 is the first "new look" P13 (TT clips) I have in the registry, but #H7184 is built no different to the '70 P13's - unless it's a P15 that had its crankset swapped (doubtful).

well biked's '71 isn't in the registry (and I don't have the S/N), so I can't comment on where it falls into the mix.

My serial number indicates an April, '71 frame date.

I measure it 23" center of spindle to top of top tube.......I ride 23" to 24" frames pretty much.

Like all my bikes, I like to think of it as a gift from on high. And nobody really owns
something like this, you just get to ride it for a while.

I know what I was riding in 1971, and it was somewhat lower end than this.

Amen to that. I was nine years old riding an orange Otasco-branded ten speed.

Good call - his red frame isn't in the database either (though his '66 and '83 are).

Those are later brakes (domed q/r levers). Probably upgraded later.

"Fully transitioned" for me would include the new fork. I had forgotten that the "in-betweeners" I've seen are from '71 and not '72 - unless I've missed some oddball '72's, which is certainly possible.
