Later, Janssen sold rebadged Vitus's and Japanese Aero bikes as well.

Haha, glad someone mentioned the questionable quality of Flandria's framebuidling.
Anyone else come across the story about Freddy Maertens: he didn't like the Flandria frames so had some built by De Rosa. The boss didn't approve, but Freddy sneaked them into the Flandria factory for a respray. When he came to collect his frames he found them mangled up in a skip in front of the factory - the boss had them smashed up.

Can't remember where I heard that now...

I've encountered 80's Jan Janssen frames that were just rebranded Vitus 979 frames. I surprises me a bit that a Belgian marque would sell French made bikes. I thought the two countries don't really get along that well in terms of national pride stuff........Just like how Agatha Christie made us aware by showing how Hercule Poirot does not appreciate it when he is mistaken as a Frenchman.......

Apparently it was fairly common in those days for professional riders to bring their own frames and have them repainted in the sponsors' colors, as some of these sponsors, like Flandria and Superia only made mass-produced bikes. Rik van Looy is known to have ridden a Masi dressed up as a Superia, and is said to still own an Italian-built Flandria.

Perhaps an idea for a new thread: bikes that are dressed down.

Would you say that is similar to how the 7-eleven team supposedly rode "Huffys" in the 80's?? Were they really Huffys???....really???

Not sure what a flandria is...

According to the seller it is a NOS 91 corsa with NOS C-record!

It's on the truck and I should know for sure latter this week!

I needed another bike like a hole in my head, but this one should be very nice.....(I hope)!

Glad the C&V board likes it!

This was at one time very common. Merlin made Greg LeMond's TDF bikes. Pegoretti built Michael Indurain's bikes and had Pinnerrlo paint them.

Many more I am sure.

Oh yes, the Huffys had Serotta brake stays.

Chombi,

Flandria is from Belgium. Jan Janssen isn't. They are Dutch. I've had several Vitus frames that were branded 'Jan Janssen'. Two of them were MTB frames: the CL1 an SC1. JJ also carried the 992 in their line up.

I assumed he/they were Belgian as the brand came up in this discussion. Thank you for the correction. I was a bit suspicious as Janssens sounds too Nordic to be somebody from Belgium....I guess I thoghtt he could have moved south.....

Actually, 'Jans(s)en(s)' and 'Pe(e)ters' are to Belgium what 'Smith' and 'Jones' are to the english-speaking world.

The Jan Janssen factory is located in Putte, which is a small town where the border runs through. So you have a part located in the Netherlands and a part located in Belgium. I don't know on which side the actual factory is located, but since Jan Janssen is a Dutch cyclist I always thought of them as being Dutch bikes.

Another brand from Belgium that you can see regularly is Giacomelli.

As does the value of my bikes, which - to be honest - is not a bad thing considering what's happening to my pension fund these days ...

Hello,

Here's a link to a post about a bike I found near me in Belgium. It's made by 'Safe', a producer from Belgium. As you can see, it needs some work doing to it, but could be an interesting project.

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...4#post13418934

Cheers,

Johnny

Just made a trip to Belgium to pick up this Martelly. Needs some work, but I think it is very pretty. Check out the "seat fork".
