New high for an Ironman?

What can you get for $799, plus $149 shipping? Why this beautiful red and white Expert.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CENTURION-BI...55587180878551

No doubt this should go in the wacky CL/eBay thread, but I couldn't resist. It even has a Bell saddle.

What have we wrought?

frantik 09-25-11 05:56 PM

$183.64 Standard Shipping for me

for prices like that, he could afford some lowercase letters and bigger pictures

also has the year wrong

Old Fat Guy 09-25-11 06:08 PM

Someone offer him the price of shipping. Having a riser tube makes it worth at least that much.

Chicago Al 09-25-11 06:11 PM

To clarify, it's probably a new high asking price. That has nothing to do with what he'll actually get, esp as he notes this one has some rust. To get north of $300-350 an Ironman has to be pretty darn close to immaculate. There's been one sitting on Chicago CL for months, an '89 Master I think, very thoroughly described and apparently in VGC, asking $500 to start, now down to $400 and I think still not sold.

There was that extra small one that sold for more than $500 on eBay recently; we had a thread about it.

frantik 09-25-11 06:32 PM

yeah even in my inflated market Ironmans have a hard time topping $400

mapleleafs-13 09-25-11 06:42 PM

I HATE IT WHEN YOU SEE AN EBAY LISTING AND EVERYTHING IS IN CAPITALs! He NEEDS TO TAKE A COURSE in ONLINE ETTIQUETTE, OR MAYBE HE'S JUST SUPER EXCITEd ABOUT SELLING HIS IRONMAN!.

Preynmantis 09-25-11 06:44 PM

The red/white Coke bottle backdrop for the photos made me blink...

Is it me or are the tires a bit low. Where was that thread about how to take a good bike photo...?

rccardr 09-25-11 06:46 PM

...and do ya think for $800 he could maybe wash it?

he doesn't want to hurt the vintage dust on it, then it wouldn't be worth 800 right?

gomango 09-25-11 06:55 PM

It wasn't that long ago we were buying these at garage sales for $30.

A good swift cleaning, lube as needed, tires, new wrap on the bars, maybe cables, and we were able to pocket a quick $150 for our efforts.

Sigh.

VintageRide 09-25-11 07:22 PM

Someone locally near Vancouver has his as new ( as in never ridden ) Dave Scott listed for 800 cdn. It has been up for sale at least three months. Is it a fair price - does not seem like there is any real interest.

it's still possible to make $150 profit, you just have to invest more. I see a fair amount of ironmans for $200ish

Alan Edwards 09-25-11 08:14 PM

The size 48cm went to a bidder in Japan for $611, a vary special case. They can be had for $200-$300 any place that there not sold by a flipper or jerk. The purple and white one is still on there for $650 with flat tires.

horatio 09-25-11 08:31 PM

Yes, I know it's his BIN price, but I think it illustrates how ridiculous the asking prices/expectations have become for some bikes. I'd put in a low-ball offer had I not just won an '86 in better condition.

RobbieTunes 09-25-11 08:48 PM

Someone has to bust the curve once in a while.

I'm sure you do, but we don't.

$350 - $400 is our new norm.

balindamood 09-25-11 08:58 PM

You would think that all of you with $$$ sunk into Ironmans would be encouraging higher prices.

Maybe you hope to buy more of them, but just say'in...

yeah, i agree that 350 is the norm, but i do see them for less. that is how you can sell them for $350 and still make a profit

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/2588614560.html - $200 - (single speed conversion)

i saw an 85 model with a bent fork going for $175ish. coulda squeezed some profit out of there too. it sold now

of course then you have the guys who are asking $500 (though he posted another one asking 400 now): http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/bik/2611076814.html

Oh yes, they are out there. I came across a Miami Vice in fair shape a couple of weeks ago for $150. I was tempted but decided to hold out for a red & white - one of my "grail" bikes - which should be on its way tomorrow. I've not seen any red & white Experts pop up locally in the past two years.

horatio 09-25-11 09:28 PM

It's not just Experts and Masters you run across - that Miele I posted about in "what's it worth" a few weeks back is still listed for $600.

mine ain't getting sold any time soon regardless of how much i could get for it..

Alan Edwards 09-25-11 10:31 PM

I love my 86 red and white, picked it up Friday for $250 and had to drive to San Dieago. Have 7speed parts, white hoods, tape, and housing ready to go with Veloflex Pave' tires. Going "old school". Probably have $400 tied up when I'm done. I don't mind when the asking price is high, but you would think that you would see something done for that asking price, like tires that hold air.

I think once I rationalized all that "$$$ sunk into Ironmans" to myself, I just had to rest a while.
