Trying to replace rear axle
 

So basically what happened is the cone on the drive side of my 10 speed KHS backed off, and the cone was damaged. I only rode it a short time but it is my ride to work so it was about 3 miles, I had to remove the rear brake to make it easier because the wheel was wobbling so much.

I ordered a new quick release axle that is the right measurements, namely this one -

now as I went to put the wheel back together, it seems I'm missing some sort of washer or something because I can see the ball bearings and in fact it looks like they could fall out.

am I missing some sort of dust shield? All I have is what came on that QR axle I linked, plus the hub in the wheel & ball bearings.

Unfortunately I don't have much opportunity's to get to my LBS as I work 9am-8pm and they are open 10am-6pm :lol: must be nice.


I've tried looking at several hub overhaul videos on youtube and on the park tools site, but none really show a blown up picture of what the hub assembly on these old loose ball cup/cone hubs should have.

If I had to guess , you perhaps misplaced the dust cap some where?

They usually have to be pried off before repacking and then popped back into place ( I think some are threaded in...?) I myself have lost one of these while repacking a set of hubs , most decent LBS probably have some kicking around, co-ops too.

That would be my guess too. Did the old axle have an integrated one?

I hope you mean 10 speed in the CV sense. Otherwise that axle won't be long enough.

the bike is a 1984 khs, 5 speed freewheel on the rear. I measured my old and it matches the one I ordered, the only difference being my old was a bolt on axle not QR, I figured this was a good time to 'upgrade' to make changing out flats easier.

that picture doesn't work but it's possible the dust caps came off while the hub was self destructing on my ride home.

just google 'bike hub dust cap' or something to that effect, it's just a doughnut shaped piece of metal that fits into the body of the hub. Possible it fell out when your hub broke down.

The dust caps really should have been there until you removed the wheel. Who worked on this wheel last, the cones coming loose is not a good sign....maybe the dustcaps were not there to begin with.

I don't know, I bought the bike used about 6 months ago and just use it to ride to work. I put about 450 miles on it before the rear hub got loose.

The dust cap may have been integrated into the old cones. They are removable, but may not fit on the new cones. QR cones are usually a larger diameter than bolt on. You never know though, they may fit your new cones.

+1 there's no way they could fall off the wheel while it's on the bike. Sounds like they were left off by the PO.
