Thanks 9volt! Nice bike, I'm doing a couple more things to my Finest and then will post pics.

Well, this is still a work in progress but I will finally get it on the road this week. A S12-s converted to 650B. Still need to mount on a real saddle (probably a Brooks) and then I'll probably run it like this through the summer until I figure out just what I really need in ways of a touring drivetrain, racks, etc....

Speaking of Conversions...

Here is my 1980 Fuji Royale converted to Sturmey-Archer AW-powered Japanese City Bike (Toshi Baiku):

I call her "Toshi-san", which I've painted on the chainguard. This is a wonderful lightweight runabout that took me most of the winter to get right. She rides like a dream now...

Just finished this build, something to cruise around the neighborhood. Still some small changes to do. I need to pull this saddle off, I got it from my AWOL and it is killing my back. Maybe ill switch the handlebars to Soma Oxfords.

'89 Fuji Ace conversion with Shimano 105 11 speed groupset, Mavic Open Pros laced to Ultegra hubs and Deda stem and bars.
It will soon be joined by the '78 Newest once I have time to complete it.

I know this is nearly a year old but and many people mistake the "Spirt" for Spirit but as the bike in question was an '86 Team Fuji wouldn't that be a "Sprint" FD? That's what my '86 has on it.

Yes, if the OP's bicycle was a fully OEM 1986 Team, then it would have been a Sprint front derailleur. This would be the first time that I've seen somewhat mistake Sprint for Spirit, given the contrasting print and large lettering on the matching rear derailleur. However, mistaking Spirt for Spirit is a common error, as the name is just stamped into the cage and there was no matching rear derailleur.

A 1979 Fuji Royale I picked up as a frame set and refurbished a few years ago, mostly its period correct except for the newer tourney rear derailleur I even found a pantographed Fuji crankset

True enough and I bow to your superior FUJI wisdom, most of what I know about my FUJI's I've picked up from your posts and I thank you for your willingness to share. But with all due respect, this is the first time I've seen "someone" replaced with "somewhat". Damn autocorrect.........

just picked this up for 100$! i have a few tiny friends.

needs some work (original front wheel stowed away for protection) this is after removing some of the wrecked parts. nitto stem is still OK but bars were bent unfortunately.

the most unfortunate. any ideas on how to fix this up a little? straighten it out? i was thinking maybe clamping it down over a steel post. the original seatpost isnt actualy stuck but i'm sure it would get scratched to heck on the way out. really frustrated at whoever did this and clueless as to why

1972 Fuji Finest

I just picked up what I believe to be a 1972 Fuji Finest. It has some rust issues that I'll need to deal with. The paint and chrome look pretty good and I thinK the bike will clean up nicely. The stem is stuck though. The parts look to be pretty much all original other than the saddle and front derailleur:

I think someone added the "safety levers". In 1972 my wife and I bought 2 Fuji S-10-S from a shop in Gaithersburg, MD. They had a Finest on display and I really lusted for that bike, but we couldn't have afforded to buy it. It had no safety levers and came with sew-ups. You got a good one. Does it have Grand Compe brakes and Suntour V-Luxe?

Agreed about the safety levers; the saddle and shimano 600 arabesque front derailleur are also not original. But everything else appears to conform to the catalog. The bike came with sew ups laced to sunshine high flange hubs.

I'm looking forward to restoring the bike. I have a set of first generation dura ace side pulls that will look good on this bike as well as a sugino mighty tour crank (48/34 rings). I'm thinking of an "eroica" build for climbing hills and dealing with rough roads. I'll go with suntour derailleurs and probably sun tour bar end shifters. It has lots of clearance and can take 32c tires easily.

And the original Ukai brand tubular rim on the bike was a weird foam-filled rim that was strong but heavy.

My '78 Fuji Newest which I just finished today after over one year of delays. It came to me in incredible shape after being stored away for over 35 years. Now it is ready to hit the road again.

My understanding is that the late '70's Newest is a rare one indeed - so finding one almost in new condition seems like the proverbial one in a million - beautiful looking by the way, Fuji really got the frame colors/ contrasting decals plus the font design, these along with the late '70's up to 1983 Treks had some of the most artfully conceived bikes out there during that time period. The exception with Fuji would be something like the Opus III above, someone had a real eye for what really worked. Even my lowly 1981 S12S looks good. Simple yet so elegant.

Don't you sometimes feel just a bit wary when riding it? I certainly would knowing what a very uncommon model it is, guess they simply never sold that many which was quite common back in the day, not many would spend the extras money for the higher end models.

Just came across this thread, and thanks to those who've posted. I've rarely come across a Fuji (though I did walk up Mt. Fuji). Once BF member norskagent showed me his Feather, I was into the light, so to speak.

My apologies for it not being C&V, but one of my friends earned his citizenship and this is how he rewarded himself. I was already working on it, just because, and it worked out.

Thank you very much. I just took it for its 17 mile shakedown ride today and I must say this bike is splendid. Fast, nimble, beautiful and light. I propped it on the rack at my wife's college while I waited a few minutes for her and it did turn a few heads. I am not wary in the least to ride it. I am an experienced urban cyclist and if you are referring to theft I would NEVER leave this bike or pretty much any other unattended on a rack.

Recently added this '83 Royale II to the fleet, it's a size too small so a Nitto Technium stem is on the way, this makes Fuji # 5. Paint and graphics are very good and virtually no corrosion anywhere that I can find so far. I'll probably replace the MTB saddle and seat post with a brown Brooks B-67 and a fluted seat post and definitely replace the bar tape. The gold is worn off the braking surfaces of the rims but they're true and the hubs are in good shape so I'll just clean them up and run them as is.

The Fuji roster to date:
1982 Monterey NOS frameset, just about have all the pieces to finish it now.
1983 Espree
1983 Royale II
1986 Del Rey
1986 Team Fuji
