C/V but off the path...

Hello all, I've looked at the other areas of this forum but figure since we are all C/V fanatics this is the best place for this. I would appreciate any input/titles on any good books, auto biographies, or stories you all have read on older riders, races, and so forth. Just read some neat stuff on Eddie Merckx and thought it would be cool to read other stories of let's say "classic and vintage" riders. Moderators, I apologize if this needs to be moved elsewhere.

Thanks, happy riding.

Thank you Tom,
The book about Major Taylor looks perfect for the type of stories I am interested in.

supposed to be a good book on coppi too - fallen angel - that supposedly focuses more on the man than the racing

The Flying Scotsman ........biography about Graeme Obree is a good read, although somewhat depressing

I've always wanted to track down and read this:

"The Eagle of the Canavese," by the excellent writer Herbie Sykes. It's about Franco Balmamion, the last Italian rider to win back-to-back Giros, and it focuses on the 1962 race. Lots of good research and interviewing went into the book.
Also "Kings of the Mountains" by the also excellent Matt Rendell about the history of Colombian cycling. Also very well researched.

I struggled a bit with this one - still haven't finished it. OK, but nothing special, in my opinion.

Thanks a bunch guys and gals, I knew this was the perfect place to ask. I figure since the weather is starting to change I'll be able to do a little more reading, and hopefully get to the neglected bike restoring, on bad riding days.
