I picked up this Sears Spyder for $50 at a yard sale from the original owner, his wife said he would clean & polish it once a month since it was new and kept it in the house. I sold it to a collector for $150 when I realized I really had no where to keep it that it wouldn't get scratched up.

I had a purple Sears Spyder 5-speed with a banana seat and ape hanger bars when I was in elementary school. The shifter was on the curving top tube, mounted within a metallic/chrome plastic box, and it had a little black ball on the end. It was like a muscle car bike. Must've been 24-inch wheels, though I can't remember, but they were bigger than my friends' Schwinn 5-speeds, which must've been 20-inch.

I loved that bike. Stolen from the school bike rack in 3rd grade and recovered by the police a few days later. Miraculous.

My Spyder was maroon - I rode that thing all over Coralville IA. When we moved to TX, it was sold to eliminate goods we had to move.

Why did the owner of the purple one sell a prized childhood possession.

It was bought for his grandson in the 70's and stayed at the grandparents house since it was new, they wanted to teach him how to to take care of his stuff from a early age, if the bike was left outside he couldn't ride it for a week and had to clean & polish it himself with out the help of granddad. The grandmother told me if I thought the Spyder was clean I should see the 1973 Schwinn that he bought her new she said it was spotless, she wanted to sell that too but he wouldn't let her.

whoa! real close! the flower pattern was more like the hippie-type (hippies, forgive me) and the one
i looked at was single speed, coaster brake, same frame (except girls)- and blue. still, i was a-wishing i had a little girl to teach
to ride it.

where'd the colored spokes come from? nice, fun, touch.

I don't have found memories of the Spyder. I crashed one when I was young and broke my wrist. But they sure looked cool even if the road bad with those daft handle bars.

Those are covers over the spokes. Kinda like a straw that is cut from on end to the other and you slip them over the spokes.

I haven't seen spoke covers on a bike in years I know they where common in the 70's. Does any one know where I could get some now I think I some for my current build.

was back at that shop yesterday and hoped to get a pic. gone, gone, gone.
i did get a couple of other things , though-
a made in england raleigh and the other has the badge missing, but i remember these 24"ers from my childhood.
built like tanks, yes they were, and this one is certainly a survivor. take it home, clean it up, wax, streamers and
and a basket and most little girls would love it to death.
