Actual Shimano Frame?

We all snicker when we see Craigslist adds for Shimano and Campagnolo frames...but this one seems really interesting to me. I wonder who made it? I'm guessing Panasonic:

Didn't ebay start charging fees on shipping to eliminate these types of ads?

They charge a final value fee on shipping, yes.

Hmm, only $2000.00 shipping?

Seems like a bargain

Unless you consider the fact that I can ship a 400lb pallet of engine parts to Australia for about half that.

I thought that was the case...so there's really no advantage to the seller for this type of sale.

2 grand is really not all that surprising for a full NOS Dura-Ace AX group and a NOS frame of unknown manufactuer that at least looks pretty nicely put together.

there are one or two bikes around town here that have shimano decals on the st and dt (they appear to be under the clear coat - yes I checked. I'm obsessed ), but with 105 on the male bike and positron on the mixte. BTW, I don't think the price is outrageous, NOS ax is very expensive. Rightly so, it's awesome.

Pretty. I guess it's just the perspective of the photo, but that bottle looks absolutely huge.

Would this have been a show bike for use in Shimano's display booths at trade shows, or was this actually available for purchase at some time?

I'm not criticizing the price, I just don't understand why he put it in the shipping. Ebay took away the motivation to do that.

That was my thought too...maybe a display for AX.

I bought a white, Shinmano branded frame bike on CL locally a few months back. Seemed legit, and ca 1980 or so. There were no other makers marks on it.

From the listing:

Estimate transit time, this item will be shipped from “South East Asia” within 2 business days of receiving your complete payment and clear information
I wonder how much it would cost to fly down to SE Asia and bring it back with you on the airplane...

He's not really charging 2 grand in shipping - it's part of the item's price. People used to do that because ebay fees weren't calculated on shipping, but they are now - so I don't get what point this serves.

There are Shimano bikes out there. I've had this aero bike bookmarked for several years: [Click!]

I'd wager they're re-badged Tsunoda or Panasonic.

My best recollection is that Shimano contracted builders for show bikes to hang their Dura Ace AX group off of. None were really 'Shimano' built. I don't believe either example shown are Panasonic, at least they don't resemble the Panasonic AR6000.

Yes. Even Trek built one (actually, Tim Isaac built it). AFAIK, Shimano still has it in the museum in Japan.

It would be interesting to know who made it...the bike on ebay looks a lot like a Team Panasonic I had and the aero one looks like the Lotus/Tsunoda frames that sometimes come up for sale. I read somewhere that Nagasawa built some Shimano branded bikes as well.

The eBay bike has the oval seat tube, like the AR6000, but not much else in common. There were a few others back then, one branded Araya, as I recall.

^Lotus, that's the one I couldn't think of. I'd rather have an AR6000
