Tugurl and Harlan make a trade AKA Harlan builds a rando/cross/tour bike
Sunday Tugrul messaged me about his road frame with cantis so I decided to take a trip up to see him with my GF to take a ride on the NH coast. I immediately fell in love with the gaudy color and knew I had to have it.
Frame:
The day before I went up to see him I came across an absolutely HUGE Trek 560 and we hammered out a trade (frame for frame). I loved the 80's-tastic aerobar setup but the twist grips shifted like junk. The components were quite decent and it even had a 9s Ultegra RD! Perfect since I was planning to go 8,9, or 10s on the new build.
Tugrul and I also swapped chainrings (I don't really like biopace and a 42t small ring) so I ended up with 53/39 on the new setup.
I spent an hour or so today getting this all rigged and ready. I'm quite pleased with the result. I have 8s Dura Ace STIs in the mail to me then it will be ridable. (The 105 SLR levers are placeholders, and I need to make a decision on the bartape, it's pretty horrendous).
I do need to make an effort to find some decent front and rear racks [and front bag(s)]. Other future plans include wider tires and rigging up a permanent light setup. I plan to use this rig for 'cross and some touring/rando.
Specs for the geeks:
Shifters: Shimano Dura Ace ST-7400*
Brakes: Shimano Deore BR-MT62
RD: Shimano Ultegra RD-6500
FD: Shimano 105 FD-1050
Crankset: Shimano 105 FC-1050
Pedals: Shimano Deore XT SPD
Cassette: Shimano 105 HG-50 8s
Chain: SRAM PC-850
Post: Strong 27.0
Saddle: Kashimax Aero
Headset: Tange
Stem: SR Custom 110mm
Bars: SR Custom
Wheels: Easton/Velomax Circuit 28mm depth
Tires: Continental GP4000S 700cx23mm

...and now I'm wishing I grabbed that frame from Tugrul! It's ugly and beautiful at the same time...mostly the former though
I kid, it looks like a fun ride!

Hah, I *love* the dramatic lighting.
I'm going to try to re-space a 135mm Deore LX rear wheel (replace axle, dump some spacers, re-dish) and if that goes well, maybe I'll have the 560 running sooner than later.
Did you have a good time riding by the ocean?

Those older novaras are pretty sweet. My friend had some novara bike made with tange 2 and it looked identical to a centurion that I had... I was convinved that they were the exact same frame.

Sounds like a lot of work on a wheel, but kudos if you can pull that off. Unfortunately 135 is a bit of a stretch for that frame.
The ride by the ocean was gorgeous! Super windy but the way back we flew. Then we got a seafood dinner and drove home. Well worth the trip!
Yep, Tange 2 it is! I don't know much about the brand and had never even heard of it before Tugrul messaged me the pictures. The frame is spaced to 135mm and has all the touring braze-on fixings. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

Death fork? Naaaah!!
Now that I see how small the frame is I'm glad I didn't follow up when tugrul offered it last month on the Cape. Nice bike, though.

Keener splendor
I love that purple Novara. For some reason, I've been into purple bikes lately. I stop and check them out.
I agree that that handlebar tape doesn't match, but save it. It's got personality, and personality goes a long way.

Update: shifters arrived and installed. Slightly more eclectic bunch of parts than I would normally dream of, but I do love utility. Pastor Bob is sending me a rear rack too! I need to track down better wheels and matching tires.
