The older 10speed stuff does not look out of place on a vintage bike either.

i'm pretty surprised that not too many people ride their old campy stuff anymore.
i have a vintage Faggin with late 80's Shimano 600 on it and downtube shifters, and it's pretty fun to ride, no doubt it'd be more fun with brifters.
but no way would i put brifters on it!
my friend rides old campy stuff, and he's just 21 years old, nothing new school for him.
i'm rebuilding a trek 1991 1420 with full campy 10 speed.
bottom line, i'd say definitely don't sell what you got! it's worth a lot more than the price it would sell for on ebay.
just get another bike.

Yeah I'm probably buying from ribble, not sure which group I'll go with yet. Veloce looks pretty good because it's silver and would match the bike well. Chorus 11 speed would be awesome but I'm not sure if I can afford it and a set of wheels.

If you sell it, the day will come that you wished you didn't. Of that I am sure.

I like the look of NR and SR, but I also had 2 bikes with C-Record and I don't miss that stuff at all. I still have a crank, shifter & headset, but i haven't sold them because they're a bit beat up and just haven't got around to it yet.

I love having a couple of modern bikes with all of the upgrades and a couple of classics with all of the beauty and memories. Newer parts or not, an old steel frame like that on your Colnago isn't going to have the ride quality of even an inexpensive modern frame. The shortest route to where you want to go is to buy a nice, used, Campy equipped modern bike. Apart from weight, the functional differences between the high and lower end Campy groups are minimal, so you can save a lot of money by skipping Record and current Super Record. Veloce is a very solid working group. If you keep the Colnago you'll always have a bike with the very best for its time.

Here's an example:

Check out the price on these Khamsins. There might be a discount coupon available as well.

Do the upgrade to newer stuff, for sure. But, mark my words, the day will come when you will regret selling the SR group. And it will likely cost a heck of a lot more to replace it then, than now.

Just an opinion.

Hm, I ride an old frame with SR and a new one with centaur, and both are very nice gruppo's - the SR just looks a lot better. I'm building a steel concorde SL frame up with daytona nine speed now. I'm definitely with the people above that state that you shouldn't change over but go n+1.

If it's something you want to do then give it a shot, but hang onto what you can in case you want to convert back.

I keep an eye open for a Campy Chorus group to put on this bike, but the 8speed 600 group on it works so I don't look too hard.

You could keep the SR crank and front derailleur to use with your 10 speed drivetrain.
I use a "5-speed" crank and NR fd with one of my 10-speed Campy bikes. flawless.

Campy 10 speed is great and you'll love it. You should at least try it.

In my case, I found that although it worked beautifully for me, it did not add anything to my enjoyment of cycling, so I wound up going the opposite direction. So I ended up selling my Campy 9 and 10 speed bikes, and now ride mostly friction shift Campy NR with some downtube and barcon Shimano SIS. But then I grew up with Campy NR, I know how to get the most out of it from years of practice, and I actually enjoy using it. That doesn't mean someone else wouldn't legitimately reach the opposite conclusion.

But I'd hang on the the SR anyway--sell something else to raise funds if necessary.

You'll only miss the idea of having a vintage bike, not the actual ride. Promise.

I am glad I found this thread....

I was going to upgrade the brake levers and calipers on the bike as well as the pedals anyway, maybe I should just go all the way?
After riding my 2012 Bianchi Infinito with its Record 11 gruppo, I am sold on the brilliance of the modern drivetrain and brakes systems (especially Campy).

For years I had resisted the notion of upgrading my 1989 Bottecchia to a newer groupset. After reading the comments here (and my expereince with the Record 11 speed groupset) I think I am ready to upgrade.

How do you guys (and girls) think my 1989 Bottecchia would look like with the Athena 11 speed gruppo (in polished aluminum of course)?

Thanks for all of the opinions. The thing is, the SR parts have no nostalgic value to me because they are from before my time. I do appreciate them from both a mechanical and aesthetic perspective, but a modern 10 speed group suits my riding style much, much better. I have a modern bike with STI shifters so I know what it's like. I also still have another DT shifted bike (one is enough for me). I really thought I wanted SR until I used it for a while. It's really nice and smooth but when you're in a hurry it does have deficiencies. If I left the bike fully original I would rarely ride it. The frame is great and fits me perfectly though.

Robbie and I both have pretty good plans, I think.
