That's because rich people don't want to be seen throwing out old junk. They throw out new junk instead - usually less than 10 minutes old - and some don't even wait to get it home from the store!

So true, blackbird!
I've saved some of it on trash night, if the regular scrounger guy in his red Ranger pickup doesn't get there first....
It's obscene how many pounds / cubic feet of 'waste' a family of four (or less) can put out, week after week. We have almost nothing at the curb each week.

Funny, our dump was considered a punishment for city workers. It turned out to be pretty good for them as evidenced by their individual stash piles. Soon the city placed no scavenging signs meant for the public and the "dump" became a preferred place for city employees. I've never seen a good bike there because workers snag them up.

It happens where I live also. Fortunately, non of the employees knows much about old road bicycles. Mustangs, and the like, get snapped up pretty quick. There was a near mint one there a week ago but the guys told me to leave it, since they wanted it. They could get fired for taking that stuff but I tend to mind my own business about it.

A real problem, to be sure. A couple of the "Transfer Stations" here are starting to charge by the bag. My wife and I, and her parents, eat almost zero processed and packaged foods, but too much paper is still a challenge for me. At least it's recyclable, I tell myself. Bikes at our dump? Forget it. No picking allowed and I rarely see anything of interest there anyway.
