After a few years of occasionally searching for a good quality vintage Italian bike in my size (52cm bikes are not as common as I'd like), I found this last August near my daughter's high school. The paint is too nice to be original so I assume it was repainted shortly before the previous owner got it. She had bought it 5 years prior but it proved to be too big for her, and they'd just bought a house so they had it priced to sell. I've swapped a few parts to fit me better and added the NOS bottle cage, pump clip and an NOS Silca pump, but other than that, I've done nothing to it.

I've ridden it twice for a total of about 75 miles so far. I'd ride it more but it just won't stop raining here. All it need now is a longer stem and I'm set.

i hear you about the rain. I haven't had a chance to ride my '73 Super much since building it up last Summer. What length stem do you need? Cinelli 1a?

I currently have 95mm Cinelli 1A stem with Cinelli Giro d'Italia bars. Both old logo and 26.0, which is difficult to find. I need somewhere in the 120-130 range but I can't be sure until I get the Unicanitor saddle in exactly the right place.

A few pictures of my $600.00 road-ready Colnago Nuovo Mexico. I've installed 53 &37 chainring set, Super Record derailleurs and 700x28 Vittoria Corsa tires. The bike also has new cables and housings, a Velo Orange water bottle cage and Look pedals. I owned this bike in 2016 but sold it, it was not really my size.

Back to Campy, thanks to @Spaghetti Legs. The Synchro works just fine.
I need the little plugs for the brake hoods, I know where I can source them.
Athena 2x7, not sure the hubs, rims are FIR EL-25's. Looking for a different cage.
Chorus Ti post, 3TTT/Cinelli steering. Record pedals.

Probably not as light on it's feet as the DA 2x9, but looks a little more like it "should."

Looks good. I’m really glad those parts found a good home. When I first got that Bianchi, I thought the missing plugs would bother me but didn’t notice after a couple of rides. I’ve heard you can use white pencil erasers as a substitute

You don't muck around Hubertus, that's a really clean Colnago you now own. The race number boss under the top tube is a nice little bonus.

Hi Dr.Lou, did you find your Colnago as we see it or did you manage to find all those matching components? I love the rims but normally I shy away from the 'splatter' cork grip tape, but in this instance, it really suits the rest of the bike.

Hi HPL, I'm guessing your Colnago is an '84/5 Super model? I reckon Colnago were a little 'late to the party' adding a second set of biddon/bottle mounts. Such an iconic Colnago paint scheme and an interesting little mixture of Super Record based components. The Cobalto brake set is lovely with cintered brake shoes? Do I detect a Cinelli 1R stem? Also the levers look to be from the Victory/Triumphe groupset? My favourite Campy stems are round and your seatpost looks to be an early C-Record component - love it. I've done a similar component mix as you with a couple of my very favourite bikes. I've set them up with my favourite components. I love your beautiful bike.

Hi Igotdibs, I can't give my opinion as to the approximate build date of your frame from the photo but it is approx. 1980ish as you say. The only component I recognise is the Cinelli XA stem which is beautiful. Even though the frame is a much older component that the other components it would still be a lovely riding bike. Your saddle looks like an old Concor???? I may be wrong as my eyesight is a little 'suss' but a Concor is my verrrry favourite saddle.

A great restoration. You must get a lot of satisfaction going for a ride on this fabulous bike. Surely the most iconic of early Colnago's.

Good eye @Gary Fountain, it is indeed a Cinelli XA stem and an old Concor saddle. The rest of the build is mostly Dura Ace 7900. I'm extremely happy with the way it turned out. I love the mix of modern components with the vintage steel frame.

Cheers!

Thanks hazetguy!

I doubt the decals are original. My frame has all the features of an '81 except 'Colnago' stamped chain stays. I figure it's likely a late '80 or early '81.

Thank you for your compliments and comments. The stem is a 1R; shift levers are Triomphe (I prefer the flaring); as far as the seat post goes, I'm not sure what model it is, but I like the clean, basic looks of it. I didn't know Supers were ever made with the GILCO "crimped" tubing. Due to the tubing I figured post 83/84, but how much later before that tubing type is no longer used. It does have the same head tube lugs that my 75/76 Super has. I don't believe it to be a Master, but I was told it could be a Mexico (?). I have a later bike than this without the GILCO tubing that might be a Nuovo Mexico (?) using different lugs, but the same fork design.

Yeah, you're right about the crimped tubing and not being a Super model. My mistake - I didn't see the crimps. Still, a beautiful bike.

Believe me, if I swapped my old.Super fork to that frame, it would look very similar. I have another unknown Colnago slightly newer that has the same exact fork in chrome, but definitely a different frame style and no crimps. I'm still confused with the tubing Colnago used in that era; seems that there are the GILCO and ESA "crimped" tube sets used independently within models types. ESA and GILCO tubed Mexico's were made, even with variants among frames.I'm at the point due to design, tubing, and paint; that this a 1986 Nuovo Mexico. Paint scheme used only in 86, changed to GILCO for the Nuovo model, but same lugs? Best guess!
