Too good to be true I guess...

Earlier this week I won this Ebay auction kind of unexpectedly. Due to the poor listing I guess not many people saw it.

Well, today I noticed that the money I transferred by Paypal was refunded to me with the message 'I have been out of town ,and returned home to find my home broken into and these with many other items have been stolen ,i apologize for any inconvience.'

I'm not sure what to think. These pieces better not show up in a new auction next week again...

I had that kind of happen about three weeks ago. Kind of an odd transaction and waited for my item and a week after it should of arrived. I emailed the seller and he said it must of been lost and refunded my money right away. No mention of a tracking number or when he shipped it out. But atleast it was a fast and painless refund.

That's really interesting. I can see someone taking a new, fancy bike, or even shiny NOS parts in a box, but how many theives do you think break in and steal 15-20 year old bike parts?

Happened to me, and eBay did nothing about it. The seller said he just found out that the group was broken, so he was canceling the sale. He refunded my money, then put up the components for sale again, this time with a better title. I was tempted to bid $1,000,000 and just not pay, but decided to make do with negative feedback.

I'm guessing the house break-in story is BS. The seller just didn't want to take 20 bucks for the parts. I'd almost bet a nickel he'll relist them in a month or two.

Hah I've had that happen on craigslist to me. I answered an ad for an Italian Bianchi for 100 and rode my bike 5 miles at midnight to pick it up. When I was a block away the seller called me and said he went down to unlock the bike for me and found out it had been stolen. I told him I was close and would come help him look around the neighborhood for it and he told me no thanks it was a lost cause.

I then told him if he had offers for more money I was willing to offer more. He stumbled / rambled a bit and asked home much I was willing to pay. I told him to go fv€k himself.

Sounds as if this guy just can't bear to take fair eBay market value for parts. That's what reserves are for! I wish I had a dollar for every time I sold something on eBay and had that gut-wrenching feeling of too low a price... but I'm sure we've all been there.

I've had similar things like that with Craigslist, but that's more of a free for all. Until you have the stuff in your hands you cannot count on anything. I kind of thought in general Ebay is a bit better ... until now.

Those negative feedback can be seen in his seller feedback. Click "view all feedback" and then click the "seller Feedback" tab. But my question is why his feedback shows 100% positive?

I would think when you push the button "commit to buy" you have made a contract with the seller to exchange goods for the money. If he cannot prove that he was burglurized and the items were sotlen, he will be breaking a contract and he can be liable for doing so. Demand for a copy of a police report that a burglary had taken place, if he cannot produce such, notify ebay. Not sure if you will ever get your components, but it might get this shyster booted out of ebay at least for some time and save other honest bidders from the getting cheated.

You can bring it all to ebay's attention. They will review how many times he's done this etc, and decide what to do with him

It would seem to be because the bad stuff is from over a year ago...

You know what would be fun? The OP and I make plans to get into a bidding war when this POS relists the items (always assuming the seller doesn't block him). We make his final value go into the stratosphere and then don't pay. I have 100% Positive Feedback and have never been a non-paying bidder, so it's no skin off my teeth.

What say, b dub? You want to hold off on the Negative Feedback (so this guy doesn't block you) and give this guy a taste of his own medicine? Might be fun

Oh, you're evil and conniving D Dude. But I like it! I hate this kind of s**t perpetrated by the seller. Scoundrel, pure and simple. If you can't stand to sell your parts for twenty bucks, put a buy it now on them or a minimum opening bid. Is that so hard?

Yep to all. If he wasn't getting his required amount, he should have yanked the auction before it ended, or set a reserve or starting bid.

Eh, guys, guys!

I think you are taking this all just a little too seriously. I share your opinion of the would-be seller. His behavior is not acceptable. But nor is it that surprising. Stooping to his level will not make him see light, but will more likely just help him justify what he's doing. Move on! Go for a bike ride or something!

I agree with rhm - you got your money back painlessly, just drop it. You are not injured in any tangible way; pissed is not injured. Not to justify the seller in any way, but there's little you can do without stepping down to his level and perhaps beginning a war.

Take it and move on.

What parts are you looking for, anyway? Lot's of good folks here who have stuff to pass on to those who will use it.
