DOn't know where this came from, but I agree. I had an RB-T that I was selling and someone wanted it for full-loaded touring. I told him that it wouldn't be the best option for full-loaded touring. I've heard they make great cross bikes too. If I found one in my size, I'd definitely keep it.

Seems like pretty much anything goes here, so what the heck - I'll call this one a sports tourer too... I've done several centuries on it if that counts for anything:

Never toured with it, but I commuted with it on several occasions- my 1983 Raleigh Marathon. The rear dropout got mangled so it's no longer in service, but I might be able to resurrect it as a single speed.

It's successor: a 1983 Raleigh Super Course- the Black & Tan. So far it's more sport than tourer, but it would make a pretty good tourer I think.

From the Classic Rendezvous description: "The model is rather a straight up version of the classic road design." Not exactly sure what that means, but my 1971 Mercian Olympic has what I consider typical "Sport tour" geometry: 73 degree parallel angles, high but not super high trail, short but not too short chainstays, and room for fenders.

Sport Touring- the 1986 Trek 400 Elance.

I just put the rack back on it today, put a brown Avocet Touring II saddle on and took it for a short run. One of the last of the year.

Yes, that's a greyhound in the background.

Really enjoy the C&V forum and reading about the classics. Attached photos are of my 1988 TREK 400T, I believe this was listed as a "Sport Touring" bike. A few modifications from the original, taller stem for the old creaky back, wider Nitto bars, new rear rim laced to original Maillard hub, otherwise pretty much original. Not pristine as most C&V but still lots of fun to ride. Picture with me and the saddle bags was from 150 mile overnighter on the Chief Ladiga/Silver Comet trails in June this year.

1984 Miyata Three Ten that I have owned since new. I rode two centuries on it this summer. I built new wheels last year using stainless spokes and AT18 rims. Avocet Touring II saddle is the only other change.

I had one of those in red for a very short time- I really liked the "Ovaltech" rings on that thing, as well as the way it shifted.

What great bikes. Thanks.

I haven't posted this one for a few days. Actually, I have been riding it a good deal lately.

Nice bikes. Is the TREK 400 a 1988 model?

Thank you!

John nailed "the ride" on this frame I think.

Geometry and tubeset work great together.

There are a couple of things I would change if I had this built for "me."

I'd put in more clearance for wider tires and a little more room to install Berthouds.

That's nit picking though, as this is a very sweet riding bicycle.

Over 2,500 miles this summer on her!

1985 Trek 520. Bike doesn't have so much as a scuff on it. Just need to replace 1 brake lever hood.

It has a Reynolds 501 frame, Shimano N600 group with triple cranks, 700C Rigida rims, leather San Marco saddle, Blackburn rear rack and water bottle cages, and a Zefal HP pump.

I have to agree with this as many of the '70s-'80s bike boom bikes are essentially sport tourers.

The term "sport tourer" and "tourer" also has changed over time. Some touring bikes of just a couple of decades ago can now be considered as sport tourers when compared to what is now considered a touring bike.

Repaint and re-decal?

Is that a Planet Bike rack? I couldn't use the Planet bike rack on my 86 400 Elance because of the lug at the end of the seat stay going into the dropout. I ended up going with a Blackburn Cross Rack- it works well.

I guess it depends on the interpretation of what is a touring bike is.

Every time I see a LHT, I see a pre 1988 MTB or ATB.
