1978 Raleigh Super Course Mk. II Headset Question

Ok, so before I repack the headset with grease I wanted to know how many loose ball bearings are supposed to be in the headset. I think I read 24 on top and bottom. I'm worried that I may have lost a few along the way. Thanks.

Add enough balls to completely fill the race, then remove one.

Found this in another Super Course thread. Looks like I did lose 1. Time to go to the LBS and buy 1 freaking bearing. Oh well. At least it will be back on the road again.

Never do that. You need to replace all bearings in an assembly at the same time. Otherwise the minor 1000th of an inch difference will cause the other bearings to wear unevenly and not support each other properly either.

How bad would it be to run with 24 & 25 then?

probably not bad. won't be bad just adding one from the LBS either.

try it and see. worst case scenario is you end up buying 50 bearings later and a little grease.

Get the ball bearings. A complete set will cost ten bucks, or there abouts.

Adding just one ball might mean that said ball is either bigger or smaller than all of the rest. If smaller, no problem. If bigger, then that ball will experience lots of load and very rapid wear.

Get the set.

Thanks for all the advice. I called my LBS and they have some in stock. I'm going to be on the safe side and replace them all. They said they only sold them in quantities of 144 (why don't they just do it in 150?) for $6. I can't say no to that. I needed to go there soon anyways and get some more Phil grease. This will be my first loose bearing headset job. Any advice to pass on? I've got some tweezers ready and waiting.
