Identifying a Bike: Miele Alfa, 86/87

Hey folks!

I bought a Miele Alfa a little while back and very quickly threw on a set of 8-speed 105SC recovered from a write-off in the summer. More recently, I've been getting pretty curious about the bike. Looking at the date codes on the components, there's lot of early/late fall 1986 stuff on it, mostly SIS Light Action.

Does anyone have more information on the Alfa in during these years?

Thanks!

Adrian

Given the codes it's almost certainly a 1987 Alfa, as it was dropped for 1988. The Alfa was an upper entry level, sports model and 13th in Miele's extensive, 16 model, road line-up. Inital production used Ishiwata 022 for the main triangle but was later switched to Tange #2. Retail price was $435 US.

We had a couple of guys in with them in our club. They made a good, economical, club racer.

Thanks T-Mar. I figure the old Miele never really made anything bad. Out of curiosity, when did the company stop chroming the forks on all their bikes?

Feel free to visit my website. Lots of Miele information there, including the rest of this catalog...

Unfortunately, there is no concise answer. The chromed fork was dropped in different years, depending on the exact model. Sometimes, it even came back after an absence.

Miele was well respected and considered good value during the late 1980's. They reorganized the company in the early 1990's after some financial difficulty but lost some of their reputation. BTW, the pictures confirm my 1987 assessment. Your colour is called Icy Pink.

T-Mar, where did you find all this information? I am hoping to purchase an old Miele and am having trouble finding such useful information. (MSRP, ranking in lineup etc etc)
