QUick wheel advice needed!
 

Hi all:

I'm wanting to buy a new front wheel for my Moto Grand Jubilee to replace the black anodized front wheel it came with, obviously installed as a replacement by the previous owner. Nothing wrong with it, it even has a Campy Record hub which is really nice. But I don't like the cosmetics.

I just saw this on Ebay, with a BIN of $34.95. It seems crazy low for a Wolber Super Champion which is apparently NOS. Anybody know anything about these rims? The label on the rim doesn't look like the vintage Super Champions I've seen, what is the provenance of these rims? Has someone bought the name and is cranking out new rims, or is this the real deal?

if you are looking for a 27" (ISO630) front wheel, you can't go wrong with the price.

27" wheels are really hard to move nowadays, as everyone wants 700c (ISO622).

I'd pass. That rim was sold for so long there must be twenty different decals it came with. Here are a few:

These were considered a bombproof rim back in the day even for touring/tandems, prior to the Mavic Module 3 and 4 being manufactured. However, by modern standards they just aren't good rims. It is funny because people still recommend the Model 58, but the reputation of the rim just doesn't measure up with what it actually really was.

The Velocity Dyad is the strongest 27" rim currently being manufactured, I believe. However, in 630 (27") it is only available in 48h. You can always find 'em at Peter White when everyone else is out of stock prior to another batch being rolled.

I'd look for a vintage Mavic rim. Just classier, and in reality a much much better rim. Mavic rims in the 70s and 80s with the secret aluminum alloy were special. You should be able to find a Mavic rim on a Campy or Mavic hub for cheap if you're willing to look for a bit.
