Serviced my first pedals!
 

Never had to do this before and was waiting for something to happen or "the hard part" but it was fairly easy and worked great! The pedals were clicking and crunching but i ripped them appart and cleaned the bearings and regreased and they are good as new! Pedal is Sugino PD1000 platform.

If you're like me you enjoy those times where the intimidation was unfounded, which for some reason only increases the enjoyment of having actually done something. You'd think I'd enjoy doing something truly intricate more than the things that turn out not to be so overwhelming. Go figure.

Anyone have any idea on where to get some replacement bearing caps? I have some MKS pedals that could use 'em. Too nice of vintage pedals to toss, and I'm not inclined to sell 'em until I learn how to do this myself.

Same here i need them for these sugino pedals as well. I have KKT pedals they might be the same cap.

They look at them and tell me that they aren't serviceable, I should throw them away and buy new. I tell them that it's a Dura-Ace pedal and they tell me the person who sold them to me lied. I left and found the tool for the spindle on the net, bought bearings and waited for the mailman. Some times the hard part isn't the work. When I took out the rear spring to clean every thing the rubber block has Shimano 7410 stamped in it. I don't take the advice of the LBS, it's not worth it. The bearings, tool and grease came to a total of 15$. I originaly got the pedals because they were on a crank that the owner couldn't get them off when he sold me the crank.

If you don't have caps don't worry, just grease and go. Grease them more often. I know some one who glued on a large soda cap.

It is a satisfying feeling to overhaul something that has now become a nearly disposable commodity these days... and making them work better than they did when they were new.

I have a bunch of new MKS I believe (have to check when I get home) caps in my parts box. I think I got them from Velo Orange. Not offered any more there anyway.

In my experience, almost all pedals have the same dustcap threading. At least I've found Zeus, Campy, MKS, KKT, Gipiemme, and Ofmega are all the same thread.

Rivendell has them too MKS dustcaps

As usual the French do things their own way. Lyotard uses a different thread. :notamused:

The Lyotard non-standard caps can be very spendy.
Not sure (blocked on work network) if this seller sold any, but I have seem them go for really high prices. And they tend to fall off.

Congrats on taking the bull by the horns, effecting a repair, and saying no to learned incapapacity, the throw-away mentality, and general helplessness and dependence on the wizards of occult high technology! Bikes are really simple mechanical devices and there is no reason for a reasonably intelligent and motivated cyclist with a modicum of machine skills and good tools to be at a loss in maintaining and repairing his machine.

The pedals i had serviced were Sugino PD1000 but i have some very nice KKT Kyokuto "Top Run" pedals (that have the caps) that could use a new owner. Let me know if you are interested. PM me.

A nice thing about the MKS caps (besides the facts that they're relatively cheap and work on many pedals) is that you can file/sand off the MKS logo to make them anonymous. Here they are on Campy Triomphe pedals:
