New to this site, don't know a whole about bikes or biking but I am willing to learn. Here is something that I picked up the other day for free, just wondering if someone can tell me what they think I need to know about it. Thanks in advance!http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=228830http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=228829

All Pro was the store brand for KMart bikes from the 1970s.

Free is always good.

Take it apart, put it back together after you clean it up, and you'll learn more than we can ever tell you.
The last All-Pro I had was from K-mart.

what do you guys usually use to clean them up?

I use Barkeeper's Friend to remove rust on the chrome. The active ingredient is oxalic acid. You can buy pure oxalic acid for derusting heavily oxided metal, but this bike won't need that. Make a paste with the powder and water in a small can like a tuna can. Apply with a damp rag, let set, rub off, then rinse with clean water.

Mild soap and water to remove the dirt. Any dishwashing liquid or carwash soap will do.

A degreaser for the grease and oil on the hub, and likely the handgrips. A good cleaner called Awesome is available at the dollar store. If it is especially thick, then I use a typical automotive engine degreaser.

A good car wax with mild abrasives to shine up the paintwork.

Where can I find the Barkeeper's friend? Is that the paste your talking about?

also should I change those hand grips or were those the ones that came on it?

Barkeeper's Friend is available at stores like Wal-Mart and probably your local hardware or grocery store. It is a powder similar to Comet and becomes a paste when you get it wet.

Start learning by spending some time going through the hundreds of pages of MY "TEN SPEEDS", a website designed for people new to the interest of vintage bicycles. That said...

Were I you, I would not spend much money on the bicycle you have acquired. Simply put, it is not a highly desirable model or brand but it will be fun to clean it up and get it going.

Have fun with your project and welcome to the Bicycle Forums.
