I just bought some Paselas in black. Couldn't quite believe it when they sent me two tires with different logo/labels on them. #!@*!!!
But no big deal, as I blacked out the offending, obtrusive labels anyway.

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL LOOKING BIKE COLONEL! You seem to have a great eye and the magic touch, man. I usually don't pay a whole lot of attention to threads with the word "Schwinn" in the title, but I may now. Very nice looking bike. It'll stop better when you get some levers on there :>

Thanks, Scott. They're still just Schwinns, but they're alright. I have some crusty Suntour Superbe levers that have 14 slots and plenty of road rash. I cleaned them up with a bastard file and thought about taking a Dremel to them, but I have no drillium experience nor much patience.

Another fine effort. Somehow you always are able to live up to your own standards, high as they are. I hope it rides as good as it looks.

If you decide to sell the original parts you took off of that, I would be interested. especially in the brakes and cranks! I bet that stuff would snap right on my 77 le tour II!

It's about time

I finally got this thing on the road today. As is typical for me, things changed along the way. Still, I'm really happy with how it turned out.
  • 1977 Schwinn Volare (modified and repainted by someone)
  • Phil Wood/swaged spokes/Campagnolo Omega rims
  • Sugino Mighty crankset & bottom bracket
  • Suntour Cyclone dérailleurs
  • Simplex Retrofriction shifters
  • VO Grand Cru headset
  • SR Royal seatpost and stem
  • Nitto B132 handlebar
  • Suntour Superbe levers and calipers
  • Brooks Professional Classic
  • VO Randonneur rack
  • Scott's Tyre Savers

Don't mind my ratty backyard. I was only able to do a 15 mile shakedown ride today, but I really, really like it. It feels very comfortable and smooth.

Very sharp. Very. Where do these Retrofrictions crop up? I've come across so many different Campy/SunTour/Shimano shifters just through flipping and what not. Never seen the Simplex. Arrrgh: mee white whale.

Nice job. The handlebar tape makes it look luxurious.

What's your plan for racks/fenders? The VO rack looks lonesome.

Damn. You always do top notch work. I can't seem to get my bikes looking so good. I guess I don't have that kind of patience or devotion.

Just once I would like to see a frayed cable or stripped not head on one of the Colonel's bikes. He has a perfection I will never achieve.

Every time I see a Volare I think of Dean Martin.

I would love to have a Volare. There must not been many of them sold.

Your Volare really turned out very nice. I like the parts you selected for it. I really like the look of the Superbe levers and calipers as well as Cyclone derailers.
Enjoy.

Thanks, everyone! It's nice to hear.

No fenders. I already have two fendered bikes with racks. Also, I'd prefer to keep the weight down on this bike and avoid the TCO I have on the other two fendered Schwinns. Truth be told the VO rack is on there because there are braze-ons for it. I have a vintage TA bag (thanks, holiday76!) to mount on the front rack. Ideally I'd like to have a black Acorn rando bag for this bike. Nitto (and maybe others) made a small, rear rack that is about the same size as the front one and would utilize the rear braze-ons. If I find one, I may add it, but I don't plan on needing a lot of storage for the rides I'll do on this bike. It's pretty much a 531 racing bike with front rack.

Both the damned front and rear brakes squeal. I installed new, black compound Kool Stop pads in the Superbe holders and they have toe-in (though, not as good as new adjustable holders would offer). Hopefully the shoes just need some breaking-in as I hate noisy brakes. I suspect the hard anodized rims don't help with the noise. I was kidding about the shifters. I've never looked in a dumpster.

I don't know how many, but they were only available for three model years.

Nice! Like the Cyclones, Superbe calipers and Royal post.
The whole package is understated class.

I though it was only 2 years. Maybe not huh?

That's one nice looking bike. You still thinking on going with 10 spd at some point?

Thank you. No, I'm not. The frame spacing turned out to be 122mm. I've since built a Shimergo setup (two actually) that has scratched that itch.

Thanks, man! I rode it a little more than 30 miles tonight and the brakes stopped squealing by the end of the ride so I guess the pads just needed to break-in. It's a pleasure. Very positive "ka-chunk" shifts, the steering is very responsive and, again, it just feels smooth.

That is a great bike - I tried to buy one. The bidding got to over $500 and I stopped.
