That looks very...um...odd. What's with the noodly seat tube-to-chain stay dealies? Are those some sort of belt strappy mounts at the bottom of the seat tube and down tube, or double braze-ons?
There's something happening at the bottom front end of the chain stays- kickstand mount? And is it just me, or is that top tube kinda monkey-arm-ish?
I don't know...if I'd paid $4500 for one of these...

O wow. That's fugly. And really, these reinforcements only make sense if they are added to a 60+ cm frame. some touring/dutch bikes have them. But on this tiny fella it's useless... unless GP tries to break the world record for the most loaded tourer.

If even Grant says it is odd and not for everyone, then we should agree with him. He said he wanted that extra tube so he got it.
At least wait until he's got the bike built up and explains the why and what-fors regarding this frame.

I'm intrigued. $4300 is far too much coin for a blind purchase, but I'll be happy to spectate this one.

Just brace tubes are curves rather than straight , the main triangle tube added,
is common to tandems
then that force has to go somewhere, usually a straight line
back to the bottom end of the seat-stay

I wonder if it is aimed at folks who are greatly overweight. I know they (Rivendell) had worked w/ some folks in the past who were very heavy and trying to ride to lose/manage weight. IIRC the buyer of an Altlantis returned it due to his 400+lb weight making the bike flex like crazy. Have to wait and see.

At least it's different <shrug>. Not for me, but as Fender said - it might make sense for someone.

Just a design observation: looks like the curved tubes should reverse sides; seems the drive side chainstay would need reinforcing, but maybe there's no functional purpose at all.
Oh, I just realized, with $4,500. to spend you could find almost ANY cool old classic frame and have it restored better than new, And it'd still be way cooler than that!
There's a guy I pass every morning going the other way riding a double toptube Rivendell, and every day I ask myself "Why?"

i like grant and i like rivendell... that frame is kind of bonkers, but who cares? he's just exploring different design possibilities i guess. as for the double top tube, i enjoy being able to spot a rivendell from a great distance. i like seeing those bikes as opposed to a carbon fiber cervelo or something.

I was guessing the when he talked about the mystery bike it was going to be a IGH bike a rohloff with a focus on commuting/all purose use. who knows the frame and it's non normalness feels victorian, it will be interesting to see what the actual build will be. can't tell much from just the frame

I too like Rivendell and Grant. A Bridgestone owner since '86 but cannot afford a Rivendell. However this is just beyond reasonable. $4500? A bit too far over the edge.

GP the "talking head". $4300 for a bike made out of "whatever is around the shop". Not my money. The frame is cool, would have put the shifter bosses on the diagonal tube. Vary asymmatrical frame, but not an IHG specific type. I would like a custom bike, a unique bike, but not this bike.

What is the point of the randomly overbuilt frame? And the price? I mean seriously, I know rivendell tries to sell road-ish bikes that can fit large tires, are durable, etc... but IMO you'd have to be the grouchiest of retrogrouches to pick a rivendell over this for example:
https://www.westernbikeworks.com/prod...yclocross-bike
Light, strong, stiff, fits huge tires, way cheaper

Discuss. I think the slack economy has gotten to Grant. Or he ate some bad mushrooms.

In my book, there is a lot to love about GP. I can't imagine someone on his staff saying "which do you think would be more marketable?" or " we are not going to be able to hit this price point without going with (BB30) "
And the thing we all need to keep in mind is he is a vender of solid products with a CV flair. I need him and the draw he creates even though none of his customers would buy anything from me. I am a different fish in another stream but he is good at swimming up-stream. I laugh at him sometimes but if ever asked me for a favor, he would move right to the front on the line. When it comes to "putting yourself out there" he is the champ.
