Vice grip slide hammers?!

I could think of a couple of uses for these. I bet I could make one if I though about it a while.

Great for a toothache but I would not let one near one of my bikes.

Pompiere 12-07-11 09:54 PM

I think they would be good for freeing a stuck seatpost, stem, or crank after other less destructive methods had failed.

Casey Jones 12-07-11 10:11 PM

I'd like to see one in action.

sailorbenjamin 12-07-11 10:12 PM

That's what I was thinking.

This.

I've been kicking this idea around for almost a year. Wish I had gone through with it first.

Build one with the jaws at a 90 degree angle to where they sit now - then you might have something usable for seatpost removal.\

A motorized drill with an expanding reamer would make more sense though.

You can make one pretty easily by replacing the adusting screw in your Vise Grip with the same size length of all-thread. Drill a hole in something heavy, slip heavy object over all-thread, cap with a couple of nuts.

Go about shearing off little bits of aluminum from your stuck parts :)

This made me laugh.

I grew up in the same part of Nebraska as the vice grip plant and actually toured it. A very interesting history.

I like this! I may just make my own, but admire the Yankee/Redneck know-how...they just need to get a proofreader.

Those belong in the category of "Always the wrong tool for the job."

randyjawa 12-08-11 05:42 AM

They are a stupid idea and probably don't work worth beans on something really stuck. My guess is the jaws would begin to slip immediately.

I have used slide hammers many times in industry. They are aggressive tools and can transfer lots of impact power. The question is, does one want to use that sort of action on a fragile road bicycle frame set. I certainly would not do so.

mazdaspeed 12-08-11 05:46 AM

lol if you need to use a slide hammer on a bike you're doing it wrong.

Michael Angelo 12-08-11 05:54 AM

I made something like that before, it will slip off. Vice grips are not meant to be used in that fashion.
