I believe that pic of Steve McQueen is from the set of "Tom Horn", his second-last move (1980).

Thanks very much DD, had been puzzling over this also.

The only western I could think of was "Junior Bonner" which was set in the present day when it was done ~1972.

Junior Bonner (1972) - IMDb

His most uncharacteristic role was "An Enemy Of The People" (Ibsen) 1978.

First wife Neile wrote an outstanding biography can highly recommend, "My Husband, My Friend."

You're welcome. And you're right - everything I've read about "Enemy Of The People" paints the role as unique in his CV. I've yet to see it, but I'm looking for my own copy on DVD. I'd also like to find MH,MF; from the stories of Steve's carousing on the set of "Le Mans", I'm surprised she'd be charitable in writing about their marriage :)

How many of us felt pretty much the same way back in the day?

"As a kid I had a dream. I wanted to own my own bicycle. When I got the bike, I must have been the happiest boy in Liverpool -- maybe the world. I lived for that bike. Most kids left their bike in the backyard at night. Not me. I insisted on taking mine indoors, and the first night I even kept it in my bed." -- John Lennon

Neile is very evenhanded and loving in her bio, no venom. It has been republished in a revised edition with new material added.

There is a good account in the book of how "Enemy Of The People" came to be made. McQueen had a studio contract wherein he "owed" them one more film but he was able to choose the project. Someone came to the house to talk about it and he just randomly grabbed a book off the shelf without even looking at what it was and said something to the effect of "I'll do that."

Notorious film producer Bob Evans (In his "The Kid Stays in the Picture" bio, a great read) also was pretty forgiving to Steve in the chapter about how he stole away the then-Mrs-Evans Ali McGraw. But then Bob admits also he was sleeping around a lot himself, as was/is the industry standard. :)

Bob talks about how he knew he would lose Ali to Steve. Ali for her part talks about how she was doing two or three exercise classes per day to keep him. He had warned her that if she began to spread she was out.

'The Kid Stays in the Picture'
entertaining movie. evans had great vision in the '60s and '70s: rosemary, chinatown, godfather, godfather ii, and marathon man.

'80s ... not so much.
