Bridgestone RB-T in Steampunk Motif
1991 Bridgestone RB-T powdercoated and built up.
Did I over do the reflectors?
Thanks to all of your great build suggestions and the fact that I had almost all of the parts on hand, this project came together nicely and it was fun to work off of the Steampunk theme. Thanks to Jared for the Sakae Randonneuring Bars.
I am going to set up a spare set of wheels with cyclocross tires.
Now I need suggestions for more Steampunk stuff I can hang on the bike. What I'd like to find is a small metal propellor I could mount behind the seat tube.
Have fun!

Nice looking bike.
But, why a clear reflector on the back?

Don't take this wrong, but imo it looks more retro rather then steam punk.. I do like it though very clean and simple.

Nice looking bike. No real suggestions, other than to mess it all up with paint the way they do Nerf guns. https://www.google.com/search?q=steam...w=1424&bih=757
I think that it is pretty clean looking to really hang a bunch of stuff on. And non areo hoods look better as a steampunk effect.

Imo the reflectors make the bike look cheap. Not to mention they are fairly useless for safety. The bike has potential but imo as is it looks like an old motobecane or something, not really getting steam punk.

The steam punk thing is cool visually...it's basically re-imagining science fiction in Victorian England. Pocket watches with lots of dials, propellors...gears.
I think the bike looks cool, but I'm not getting the steam punk aspect.

Since I've been riding a lot the last couple years I've been paying more attention to these things when I drive at night a bike with relectors is actually very visible.
Lights may be better overall but reflectors don't have to be switched on and don't depend on batteries to work.

The steampunk look is about aged leather, wood, copper, steel and brass. Add some wood elements and copper plate some of the aluminum parts.
Check out this Nerf gun steampunk style:

Aw, c'mon guys, it's a parts bin build. I think for a parts bin build he got the vibe pretty well. In a perfect world he may have had albatross bars and a brown saddle with copper rivets, but who has that stuff lying around all the time? He left off the decals, let the frame serve as the copper, and went with silver instead of black components. I get it. Maybe he could have an octopus headbadge made : )

Yah got to get an ooga horn. Brass. And a lightweight thing to do is paint a sign that goes in the frame on foamcore, I did one that read "DR. McGillyCuddys Amazing Tranpirational Diaphoresis Device" with a bunch of scrollwork and cheribum ect. I mounted it with a couple peices of alluminium flashing.
I have tried a couple steampunk builds, and the best reaction I have gotten is when I rode my Faux Rando bike at a Con. just alloy fenders, and bottle generator, and some racks with Swiss army surplus canvas bags. Of course the orange and yellow colors made it appeal more to the Anime crowd, and I have some pictures of girls in Japanamation Cosplay outfits sitting on it somewhere.(yes that was pretty cool)
The problem I ran into was they were no fun to ride with to much junk on them, even at a con(I go as a vendor, a tophat is about as far as I go for the clothing thing
)
There are sometimes some really cool bikes at events, but the owners are not really riders. So all the crap they drape on them is not a bother to the owners.
