Darn French bike --- another snag: Who's got a McGuyver cable hanger idea?

I thought I was in the clear for this build. My new VO French headset arrived and screwed in perfectly. However, for my 70's Mercier build, the VO headset stack height is too high for the front cable hanger to fit. I can screw in the locknut without it. But I thought I've seen cable hangers than screw onto the mounting bolt on the handlebar/stem bolt???

Or does anyone have an idea on how I can attach some type of hanger. I have Mafac centerpulls that require a cable hanger.

This will probably get flamed but I once drilled a hole through the stem with a short counterbore for the cable. It looks very clean.

You don't want to use one of these?

That works if you're using non-aero levers on a drop bar.

French stems are 22.0. Right now, I have the lock ring right on top of the cup with no washer or cable stop. I was looking at something like the above cause it has a bolt on it and maybe I can put it on the stem itself however, French stems are 22.0. The smallest of those are 25.4.

This is the most ingenious one I've seen. Not a DIY/Hack/McGuyver move, but it will work - and leaves your headset alone.

EDIT: Saw it says out of stock at Harris. Here it is at Niagra/Amazon.

Ahh, yes, I saw that one too on Niagara Cycle. Looks to be pretty clever. I'm wondering if my cantelever hanger is short enough for it. I think I'll try that one as well as a 25.4 hanger combined with a 25.4->22.2 shim for use on a stem. But that doohikey seems much cleaner.

I'm aware of the diameter of French stem. They sell a shim to 22.2mm for those. It will work on a French stem. I speak from experience.

Yah, yah, I think the hanger + shim is one idea. And this one is the next idea.

My question, too. Can't mount both the CP caliper and the Niagara gadget on the same fork crown.

I've pondered methods of hanging a rear Soma hanger off the stem. Haven't gotten past the half-baked idea stage yet, though.

Carlton used to do it - even had an adjuster - though of course that's British -not very French.

I would drill the stem even if I had room for a hanger. Done right, it's clean and cool.

hack one onto a porter rack? The other solutions seem better.

Leave the indexed washer of the headset? The MAFAC hanger I have is indexed as well, and all things being equal you wouldn't need one I you already have a comparable thing installed.
