Picked up the 1952 J.C Higgins

I drove 200 miles today to retrieve this jem. I'm told it's a 1952 but have yet to find or look for any numbers as I just got home and was starving to death. It's a Skip link and looks to be all original. Tires are shot but are so cool because they are cloth belted.
Not sure what to do with this. DO I restore it or put it under glass as is?
Here are photos fresh out of the SUV.

I like that bike a LOT!! It reminds me a bit of the Ladies Packard that I bought a couple months back. The Packard isn't as cool as the Higgins, though. That Higgins has panache!

It does not deserve to be put under glass. Were it my bike, I'd put together a plan where I'd clean it up, service the wheel bearings, BB and headset, give it some new tubes and tires and take her for a test ride. You can always decide what direction you want to go from there, but that's a starting point... Now about that chainguard: Is there a good portion of that thing that has rusted away or are my eyes deceiving me?

Yes, I think it was cut away. Maybe was badly damaged. First thing I did was get on E-bay tonight and luckily there was 1. So I grabbed that. I would love to restore it however it would not be a fast one. As it is, it so tells a story.

Yeah, I don't think I'd change a thing, except maybe the tires and the lube. I love parading around on my crusty old clunkers.

Well I put some tires on it I had. Took it around the driveway. The front hub is loose so I need to open that up an see if it's loose or a there is a bigger problem. It peddles and brakes fine.
Husband says it looks like a old war time motorcycle with these tires on it. Said I should put a big white WWII army star on it. LOL right!

Just looking around I found one restored that's about the same colour as mine was factory. But a springer version.

I also see the seat post on mine is backward. LOL

I would sit on it a make spaceship sounds. Vary cool, go for the super cleaning and waxing, greasing and adjusting. Needs some street tires, unless you want to go with the stars and camo paint.

Fantastic bike! I missed out on a similar one on CL last month.

If you don't do something about the paint, won't the rust just keep eating away at the steel?

Great find! And since it's all original, I think you should restore it. You do fantastic work.
There was a thread of a completely rusted out Columbia found by the roadside and brought back to life by a car resto guy. A good read. It was pretty recent, worth a search for.

I have one of those in my shop right now.
You've done a good job cleaning it up. I'd keep it as it is and just ride it. It'll turn heads in this condition, just as it would if you restored it.

I think I will restore it. The ride is very smooth but I tell you what! at 50 pounds. This thing is murder here in the hills of Central Alabama.
I got it in the road today, what a beast!

I got a tank off E-Bay, Managed to get it for $108 and a Chain Guard for about $20. So with that bit of luck looks like I'm going to be starting on this one next after the Schwinn.
That was a stroke of luck to find the tank for this particular year bike.

These old American bikes have really big chainrings. I tend to swap them out so hills don't kill me.
I've got an 18 tooth skip tooth ring here if you want it, it equates to 36 tooth in modern numbers.
I think it's about like what I put on my Roadmaster. It's not fast on the flats but it'll pull small camp trailers up hills.

Well that was some good news when I checked the mail today. The Tank came. I was not expecting it till after Christmas.
Well that makes the bike complete.
