People collect medals; it's a branch of numismatics (along with coin collecting). So yes, they have value. How much, I can't possibly guess. You may be able to find auction catalogs of athletic medals etc that will give you an idea. And, of course, you can always search completed auctions on ebay. That's where I'd start.

Is this the thread where we all express interest in the medal and then you link the eBay auction?

Do you like it? Is it affordable? Then go ahead and buy it. Nobody is going to be able to tell you what it's really "worth".

I find this a little hard to believe. I think it's safer to say that 99% of this type of stuff is worthless crap, and (therefore) who would go to the effort to fake such a thing? I know, I haven't seen it, so I'm not going to authenticate it sight unseen; and I don't know enough about these things to authenticate it even if I held it in my hands; but the world is full of genuine old crap. Trust me, I have tons of it myself. Including a perfectly authentic Munich police detective's badge that some day someone will find among my possessions and either wonder if it's authentic or not, or wonder how I got it.

Know nothing about them, but will ask, are you buying it from the original owner? The winner of the medal? His family? In other words, provenance would be a big determining factor for me. If it's sitting in an antique shop or something, I would be leery myself.

A real race medal would have the winner engraved on it.
They were made as stock items to be bought from a supplier, then awarded.
They were also made custom, one of a kind (3 of a kind in gold, silver, bronze) for a high value race.
If it is engraved, it has provenance that can be traced.
If not engraved, it is a stock medal and worth the silver content, if marked, say an ounce medal is currently worth $35.
Anything over that amount is it's "collectability" quotient, that is, how much you are willing to pay.
If it isn't marked silver, it probably isn't. Like this, not silver:

Cool running medal, engraved, silver $28
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-Uruguay...item5d2e6b122c

Looks like a medal, but is a souvenir

The word STERLING stamped on the back means it's silver (0.925 pure). Doesn't look fake to me, but still have no idea what it's worth.

Judging from the wannabe Art Nouveau 'metal work' in the background, post 1910 (giving time for the movement to have established itself on all scales)

fwiw, bike medals are quite common on ebay.it. They typically sell for $5-$20.

Are you asking if the photos are worth the cost? Only you can decide that. Are you planning on reselling them? If so, no, it's probably not a good bargain. If you really like them and want to hang them up or frame them or something, then sure, go for it.

I think it's a little weird to come here asking people to play "antiques roadshow" with you.

BF has a valuation forum for questions like this. Do they not have Google in Canada?
