Hi,
The film PARIS BREST PARIS JUSQU’AU BOUT DE LA NUIT is now fully subtitled in English(1) and understandable for English speakers. The title is:
I have often wondered what’s going on for Americans, English, Italians, Taiwanese, Japanese, Indians, and so on, why they are coming on the PBP from so far? what are they looking for in the long ride inside the darkness in our french Brittany or Normandy countrysides? Probably the same as frenchies, and you will maybe guesse my answer in the video...

"The biggest problem is staying awake." No lie there. I found the ditches in Brittany and Normandy to be quite comfortable for power naps back in 1991.
The look of exhaustion on the 2011 riders looks the same as it did 20 years ago.

fortunately, the nights in August don't last all that long. The first night I was too amped to sleep. The second night I slept in Loudiac and then in Carhaix. Third night I slept in Loudiac again. The film does remind me of my 4th night. I got a short nap in Mortagne-au-Perche, but then I didn't make it too far before I slept in leaning against a guard rail by the road and on the steps of a garage. Then just after dawn I slept again just before I got to Dreux. That got me home, fortunately. Maybe that's why I didn't see any of the excitement at the end of the movie.

I had to watch it to make sure I wasn't in it. I was pretty shot by the end, and looked it. A camera crew followed me out of the final controle at the finish, but maybe I'm not photogenic enough, never seen that footage.

I tore off and wrecked my RD near the secret control (probably after ca 850 km).Very, very nice locals got my bike back to rideable condition and I managed to finish.

I met an American riding a vintage PX-10 in a small town somewhere after Mortagne-au-Perche (I think). The locals were serving coffee and snacks in the middle of the night, which is one of the really awesome things about the ride. He had decided he couldn't finish in time, and had gotten an offer of somewhere to sleep. I always wondered if he hung out here.
Watching this film, I wished for more footage of the people that support the ride. That's what makes PBP special in my view, there are 1200k's all over the place, but none of them have cheering crowds at 3 in the morning. I guess being one of them makes the riders a lot less interesting to me.
