The Peugeot is dead, long live the Longstaff

So, after a little bit of patience and a search (the Australian Market is quite a bit smaller than the American or European ones) on advice from the forum members ( not that I needed any real encouragement) I replaced my broken Pug ().

(Story of the Pug in this thread)

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...oux?highlight=

So without further ado - here are some pics of the replacement that parts were swapped onto (and a home was found for some that I had been slowly collecting over the years).

Looks like you probably traded up. It's a shame those tires couldn't be just a little more blue.

Lovely. George Longstaff has a great reputation as one of the very best UK frame builders. Famous for building trikes. Looks great.

The tires seem to match the light blue in the head badge pretty well.

This is a fantastic looking bike. I don't think you will miss the Peugeot for one second after your first ride on this one.
I love the darkblue and black color combination

thanks for all the nice comments. I have to admit, yes it s quite the upgrade.I am really happy with how the Longstaff has come together. I think it is a beautiful frame and my limited riding of her has me impressed. It may not do quite the km's that the pug did (this one will stay out of the rain) but it will be ridden quite a lot. Serial number indicates it was built in 1988, so I am getting alittle closer to vintage :-). Am i changing my furm name - no the peugeot was my first road bike.

Not sure if you're aware of this, but Reynolds 531 Designer Select is a mixture of various Reynolds tubing which was made available to only a chosen few trusted frame builders. It allowed the builder to select from Reynolds' various tube sets to enable the builder to specify the optimum tubing for the client. Normally they would sell a complete set, say of 531c, 531ST or whatever. Particularly handy to be able to mix and match, especially with larger frames - giving the maximum benefit of strength and lightness to a large rider. To such a well-respected builder like George Longstaff, Reynolds would be happy to supply a mixed set - and the required Designer Select 531 transfer. Adds a bit more kudos - if you need any! The quality of the frame speaks for itself.

I had seen that written before - from what I can see - yes it is really is a high quality frame and built with care - I love the Latin "Per Angusta Ad Augusta" George used in his logo - according to google it translates to somthing like "Through trial to triumph".

I also have an Australian uilt Paconi that is 531 Competition, built up with pretty much the same component group (though slightly heavier wheels) - they feel like they weigh pretty much the same to me (I don't have any sort of scales at home - kitchen or bathroom).

The Longstaff feels like it has slightly slacker angles, less twitchy, and is so much more pleasing to the eye.

One thing I would love to find out is how the frame made it to Aus - was it brought over by the original owner - or ordered here from Aus. I emailed Longstaff Cycles whom are still in operation when I bought the frame (thought George has passed away some time ago) but did not hear back from them - perhaps now its built up and I have pics I might try to contact them again.

Damn, that's a fine looking frame; LOVE the lugwork and the detail painting. A beauty - and kudos for putting the modern stuff on her (I have a new appreciation for that sort of thing).

BTW, is is just my twisted mind - or does that head tube decal incorporate (intentionally or unintentionally) something that sorta goes right along with the framebuilder's name?

Hint: the archway

Peugeot's are still in my life - I have a Peugeot PR500 that became my main bike (all weather commter) when the original Pug gave up the ghost. It is serving well - full length fenders finally for me - they really do make a difference in all but torrential rain.

Peugeot it would seem were the 1st road bike that many have aquired and many still appreciate

Well DD - I had not seen it either - until you mentioned it - but knowing all the English men I know - I would believe that yes it would have been intentional

The Latin inscription on George Longstaff's logo is probably an affectionate twist on the motto of the Royal Air Force "Per Ardua ad Astra" - roughly translated as "through adversity to the stars". At a guess, I'd say George served with the RAF (possibly during or immediately after WW2) and adapted their motto for his own frame building business. RAF crest pictured below. On the other hand, I could be talking through my Brooks!
