New toy from cl-3 speed

Actually 1 speed right now. Not sure what I'll do with it yet Serial # 619366 on the seat lug. The rear hub has a 2 and a ten on it. Stiemied on how to make a year out of that. Any info as to year appreciated. Sadly the saddle is toast.

I bet the one of the 10 on the hub is a lightly stuck 7.

IIRC The self adjusting brakes came out in 1973...

Here is the serial location (thanks for that link!) Tube decal older (in the set before it) and no pinstripes. Could fall between I guess.

I'm thinking those brake handles were an upgrade-don't match the decal set. The hub stamps actually are pretty deep-thats what confused me.

I bet the 7 just failed to stamp for some reason, and the correct date on the hub is 72 10. Take a look at the underside of the cantle plate of the seat; those Brooks saddles are often dated. The year is in two digits, and then there's a letter for, I think, the quarter. I'm guessing 72 C.

I'll go with that. The brooks is so dry its flakey-craked on the bottom like the desert. Nothing on the plate. 72 then. Thanks all. Oh yes-made out some much faded pin stripes!

ONE MORE QUESTION! Paint is covered in little white bumps (see pics)-is this oxidation? How do I remove?

Meguiars Scratch X, but be careful around the transfers. Another trick is to put a heavy coat of gear oil on the entire bike, chrome, paint, etc. Let it sit for 24 hours or so then wipe it off. Amazing results.

I would buy that, with the brake levers that would make it a 1973 model.

Well-no/go on the oil. I'm going to get some CLR and see what happens. Feels like sandpaper-something calcified on there. I (vigorously) rubbed some nail polish remover on an inconspicuous place-and it took it off. First tried rubbing compound-that didn't do anything. Anyone ever run into this type of thing? Maybe a calcified mold? Too uniform for paint overspray....

Guess not. Well, scrubbed it down and went to work on the mech of it, I'll worry about the finish later. The shifter was wired down-so I went to Sheldon's 'care and feeding' and soaked up some info. Ureaka/it works! Tightened some spokes-got some kendas put some temp pedals on and road tested-and she rides just fine. Now I'll do some de-rusting. It's the ugliest bike I have; but it is starting to grow on me.

These English three speeds have a way of growing on you . I rode one quite like that for some time, even though it was too small for me

If there is one thing I can say about English 3-speeds it is that they are elegant in their simplicity. These bikes are about as flashy as a brick, but they are among the most reliable machines on the planet. My collection is overwhelmingly English 3-speeds, so I may be a little biased.
