Raleigh Buffs Out There...

Anyone out there have an extra "20-30" sticker around (the white and yellow ones from the 70s that came on Raleigh 3 Speeds). My old one is 95% gone on the 74 sports and I'm looking to replace it. I have all the other decals and those are in fine shape. All I need is a replacement 20-30.

www.mostlymusclebikes.com has one of the 1973-1977 Raleigh 20-30 High Tensile Steel Tubing decals in their Rampar decal set, which also includes the correct Rampar "R" seattube and fork blade decals for most '73-80 Raleighs.

Incidentally, the 20-30 decal changed in '78 or '79, if I'm not mistaken.

Take care,

-Kurt

Now you've stumped me - I have no idea where to find one of these - short of eBay. I think I've seen them once or twice there. Not sure if used or NOS.

That's the post '77 tubing decal. He wants this one:

Don't know why they changed it...

Kurt,

The decal on your Sport "snow bird," currently heading your way from NH, is a hybrid of the two stickers. Go figure.

Yep Kurt has it there. It's actually Gold-Silver "Raleigh Industries" one. That's the only decal I need that is probably out there.

I also am looking for a very small decal that appeared briefly on US bikes. It's a small Yellow Sticker that goes at the base of the seat tube that says "Made in England Assembled in USA". It's a little rectangular Yellow thing with black lettering. Doubt I'll find one though.

Bob, I believe the one on the silver Sports is identical to mswantak's.

mswantak: You are free to use the tubing decal shown. It's a scan of an original - can give you a scan of the complete Rampar set for your reference.

Never seen that "Made in England Assembled in USA" decal.

Say, mswantak, here's something for your archives:

https://www.jaysmarine.com/Raleigh_Rampar_decalset.jpg

You're welcome to use it to trace your decals out. These are originals, for post-'73 bikes (and as we all know, the tubing decal changed in '78).

EDIT: Whoops - just realized I cut the tips of the "R" off in Raleigh. Will fix this when I have a chance.

edit: see image below

This is the small yellow sticker. It reads

MADE IN ENGLAND
ASSEMBLED IN U.S.A.

(all caps)

Lines are one above the other, left justified and ragged right (not centered). Letters are black and simple stick letters. I can't really tell what font but it's a simple one. Color is that yellow you see in the picture. The camera just won't focus on it that close. I took probably 10 shots and this one was the best. The sticker's size I'll have later once my girlfriend brings over her tailor's tape so I can measure. The top right corner of the sticker is missing. The original shape would have been rectangular.

Kurt- I've never seen this decal either, besides on my bike. There is no "Made In England" typical cursive on the frame, but this one does appear. The bike is legit Raleigh Nottingham and has all the classic English stylings besides that one sticker. My '78 DL1 has the classic cursive, as does my AMF Hercules. I suppose this sticker was used to signify that the bike was partially assembled in a box and shipped to the US. When it arrived a US bike shop or retailer probably assembled the thing. That's my only idea on why this sticker is there.

I believe you might have hit it. Curious, does your camera have a focus adjustment in it's digital settings? If so, set it on "Macro" (or anything to that extent), then try the photo again. Should work.

Take care,

-Kurt

Pardon the dust and dirt (have to clean it up this weekend I guess) but here it is:

As you can see, parts are missing but it would be rectangular. Never seen another one of these, myself.

Very interesting, Mike. Do you have a full photo of the bike?

Found this on the Oldroads archives:

"I believe the "Assembled in U.S.A." was a truth in advertising thing. They could fit more bikes in a shipping container if they were broken down more and shipping costs would be less per bike."

The little lamp is an add on I did, came stock without it.

In this second picture you can just barely make out the sticker's location at the bottom of the seat tube.

Good looking Sports you have there, Mike. I like the headlight adaptation. Looks very close to an original SA, and the revised mounting puts it pretty much where an original would mount to on the Heron bracket.

It has one of the most offset "Raleigh Sports" decals I've ever seen on it's chainguard.

Not sure if you've noticed it, but the gear cable usually runs over the front of the bar.

Take care,

-Kurt

Yeah I noticed the Sports it somewhat towards the back of the chainguard. I'm not sure why that is. The decal itself seems to be original vintage. The low cable path struck me too. My 78 DL1 has the low cable path as well, but my Hercules has the high cable path. I think I prefer the low cable path if only because it's out of the way. The pump with clamp bosses, double sided kickstand and bag are my own addons. But those other strange items you mentioned came like that when I got it a few years ago.

Mainly because Raleigh became very sloppy with their C-G decal application by '74-80.

Raleigh switched to running all the gent's models with downtube-routed gear cables by the early '70s (I won't say 1973 as definite, for I haven't checked this yet). Easier to keep stock of cables too, for different length cables are required for top-tube routing on various frame sizes. Your Herc must be roughtly pre '71 then, from that TT routing.

Alright I have the measurements for that decal on the seat tube that says. From left to right length is 1 1/4 inches from top to bottom it is 1/2 inch. I'm still interested in the early 70s style 20-30 decal as well as this little one. That's all I need at this time. Any idea of the cost of just those two decals? I know I've heard MSwantak's decal work is very good as an example.

I realize this is an old thread but rather than starting another one of the same subject I thought I would ask here first.

Does anyone have an extra one of these decals? Or, anything close.

Raleigh Industrie LTD - 20-30 High Carbon Tubing

I love the looks of this bike. I can't wait to get mine looking that good.
