your list of parts

i should have my 79 colnago painted tomorrow, then i will be on the hunt for parts. kinda out of my league with the campy groups, lets say you were building this, what parts would you go with and why, i plan on building my on wheels so also whats your choice of rims. i plan on using new pedals so they will be compatible with my current shoes. thanks

Campy is out of your league as far as price, or what? Honestly, when I think of Colnago I automatically think of Campy, or maybe Dura-Ace.

Well you can't go wrong with a Campi Super Record and Nuovo Record mix which was a common thing back then. the bike would be all NR but with Campi rings and derailleurs.

Cost of finding nice parts may be the biggest issue.

There is a pair of HF clincher wheels that someone just listed in the 4sale section they would be a great periodish correct wheelset.

if your going more modern 8/9/10 spd start with these

https://store.electrabike.com/eSource..._/_750051.aspx

What color(S) is the bike? a red or bright colored bike might look better with late '80s Campi while a black or dark color (earthy tones) would look better with the SR/NR combo

That's what I put on my Master Extra Light.

Loved it.

My Super is mostly Nuovo Record though.

Looks and performs great.

My youngest son was just out on it today.

The fastest and best value to a full Campagnolo equipped bicycle is a donor Italian with that group set already on it.
Like what Joe Englert just purchased.

Rider or collectible?

If the former, pick up a Nuovo or Super Record donor bike or new Athena 11s group. Used 10s is my choice but the prices are going through the roof...

If you're going 10 speed, try to stay Centaur and above.

If you are going to ride it, I would recommend what I said earlier, or Chorus 10 speed.

Grady, I sure would love to see a picture of your Master X-light, if you don't mind.

Campagnolo victory group if you want campy inexpensively and some regard it well... some don't these can be pieced together for $300-$400
and if your going to ride it Shimano 600 groups can be had on donor bikes for $200

as cheap as possible I would go with shimano 105 under $150 or RSX I apologize to those who scoff at my suggestions but he said Knowledge which ultimately cost a lot of money, was a concern and the RSX group can be had for under $100
These are all less the wheels and hubs...

No problem. My apologies to Sloar for dropping a pic in his thread. I'll remove it if I offend.

This Master Extra Light was a wonderful bicycle for me. Had to sell her to get my son to a soccer tournament in Denmark.

BTW I would buy a used 10 speed Chorus gruppo, or the new Athena 11 in a second.

I need my Campagnolo disclaimer, I know very little about the history or the details of the various grouppos. I owned a Raleigh International and absolutely loved the Nuovo Record, still want to build one. That said, to me A Colnago deserves a good Campagnolo grouppo. I have seen several nice Record complete grouppos on ebay lately. Depending on your budget one of these seems to be what I would do, myself. If you can find a donor with Super Record or a used grouppo, GO FOR IT!!! A classic, clean Colnago 70's deserves a really nice Campagnolo grouppo. Just my humble opinion.

If this is your first vintage Italian, you may be disappointed going with vintage parts - what with the downtube shifters and exposed cables and whatnot.

If going modern, definitely agree that you'd want Centaur or better. How modern are we talking? Well, get a rear-spacing measurement first; yours could be 126mm or 130mm - 126 will limit you to 7-speed and 130 will take you all the way to 11.

Put it together cheap by taking your time sourcing the parts, whichever way you go.

gomango not offended at all, leave that pic on there, beautiful bike. drillium dude i have a nice modern litespeed, the exposed cables and downtube shifters is what i'm after on this bike, like i said i want to leave it period correct. i'm like everyone else on this forum i collect bikes but i ride em to. i'm kinda leading towards campy parts but was just unsure of quality on the other models besides record.i plan on keeping this bike as a 7 speed. i'm not really on a budget with this because i'm in no hurry to get it done. so if i have to buy a part every few months thats fine. i just dont want to build this up and it not be worthy. and i want to enjoy the ride. thanks for all the replies.

Shimano on a classic Italian would seem kinda sinful, but it's your bike, keep posting pictures as you go.

Poppycock.

Internet fantasies. Ask Sven Nys how it's working for him.

But, let's not move the focus away from Sloar's beautiful frameset please.

Not as bad as putting Huret or Simplex on it.

I agree, Campagnolo all the way.

I have three other Colnagos with Campy.

A 2007 Extreme Power with Chorus 10 speed.

A 1993 Colnago Elegant with 8 speed Record.

and a 1979 or so Super with Nuovo Record.

That being said, there nothing wrong with Rat Fink's suggestion of 7700.

Works great!

So really you need to tell us what your budget is that will let us know which groups are in your range I some current pricing I have just recently completed here in the Pacific Northwest...not including the C-record Group Which I pieced together over six months for my Lightspeed Ultimate.

a complete group is not in my budget, i plan on buying it piece by piece i understand that might be a more expensive way to do it, but thats the way i work. like i said im not in a big hurry to complete this bike anytime soon, so if i wait i might be able to find things at reasonable prices if i search hard enough. i guess what i was really wanting to know was the differences between campy models, i dont know the campy list from top to bottom. like dura-ace,ultegra,105. like what kind of quality is a victory crankset compared to a record crankset.
