Mudflaps - Sources or DIY instructions?
Hi, I'm looking to add some decent looking mudflaps to my fenders (in part because I got a trailer to take my daughter around with and they recommended getting some so I don't throw road grit in her face). I'd like something decent looking (so I probably won't be using old milk jugs). Anybody have a source they like to get them from (or a pattern and a recommended material)?

I usually get the Planet Bike Cascadia flaps. $5 shipped from their website. Easy to install, just measure your fenders before ordering.

Search "mud flaps" on Ebay (cycling) and you get some interesting choices.

I think mkeller used a piece of rubber stair tread on his Mercian with VO fenders - it looks great. Hopefully he'll put up a pic of it.
I used a clear mouthwash bottle for mine, which works well, but isn't the most elegant solution. Out of boredom, I searched ebay; you can get bike mudflaps with the 'mudflap girl' on them. What will they think of next? |
Almost anything works. I have made them out of leather, denim, plastic, old inner tubes. All you needs is scissors/exacto knive, straight edge, and a pattern which you can make out of paper. You may want to sew some edging around the oustide if you use fabric, and some put eyelets in for the mounting holes, but that is up to you.

Stair tread works fine. Some use gasket rubber. I haven't used the gasket rubber because my local hardware store only it in red, and I'm looking for black.

Yeah, that was me. I've made a handful of them and they have improved a little each time. I cut them wider than the fenders now and that keeps them nice and stiff. It definitely does the job.

That is one really clean and well-thought example of a DIY flap. Those finishing washers help protect the fender from cracking and look great!

I got a pair of fancy Buddyflaps installed. They work OK. If they wrapped around the tire a little more, they would be better. I think that they were about $15. I also purchased a pair of PB flaps as described in previous posts. They seem like a good value, but I have not mounted them yet.
If you need more than one set, it makes sense to start making some. They are easy to do. The buddy flaps: http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=239434 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=239435 |

Thanks. I could have sanded the edges to clean them up a bit, but I am happy with it as is. I did have the right screws to fit those finishing washers, but they were too long. The allen bolts are there until one day when I remember to buy the right screws.

Sorry to call you out on it, but I thought it was a pretty elegant solution.
