Who here is a skier and rides fixed gear?

Perhaps I should have posted this in the single speed and fixed gear forum, but I have come to really value the insights of the C&V crowd. I meant to ask this a while back. When we were on vacation in Keystone in December and I was trying to get my ski legs back thevconstant weight transfer involved in carving turns reminded me of what it I imagine it would be like to cycle fixed gear. Then I began to wonder if cycling fixed gear perhaps could even improve my skiing. Anybody have any thoughts on that? Am I completely imagining a connection?

If you brake a lot by backpedaling your lower quads will get better, riding fixed gives a nice tone to all the muscle groups in the leg. Hence it is recommended in the CONI manual. British cyclists swore by it to (for winter training) and Lance fancypants trained a lot on fixies too.

plus, the trepidation that I get on a brakeless fixie is the same as I get on skis. The trees come at my way too rapid.

Most of the people that ride fixed gears seem to Snowboard rather than ski.

Most of the people that ride fixed gears seem to Snowboard rather than ski.
Maybe for the younger folk but strap on a pair a sticks and follow me into heaven on earth!!

I find riding fixed and downhill skiing to very much complementary activities. Not so much in the use of simular muscle groups but in the feel of speed control into and out of carved and powered turns, likewise the "float" between carved turns is very simular to the non-powered spin of a fixed into a turn and powering out of the turn has the same soulful feel as that burst of compression out of sweet GS style carved turn on the frozen stuff. Love, love love both activities!!

So ya, you could say fixed gear riding may help with the ski legs.

What you are describing is precisely what I imagined... Just when I told my husband I wouldn't get anymore bikes.

I find riding fixed uses my hamstrings a lot. It also uses many muscles I don't normally use heavily, such as my pectoral muscles! I try to do most of my braking with my legs, but I have brakes for emergencies when my legs don't suffice.

The way I could see it being useful is that on a FG, you are forced to keep your legs engaged. With a freewheel, you have the ability to freeze up and lock into a position when you make a sharp turn or a patch of ground looks sketchy. On a FG, you have to pay attention and deal with everything that comes your way.

speaking from "the younger crowd" i'm seventeen and both ski and ride a fixed gear when i don't want to take my C&V roadie.

speaking personally my legs hurt in very different spots when getting back on my bike and back on my skis. Both skiing and riding fixed work my leg muscles to a pulp, but both in their own unique way, so i wouldn't really consider them to be the same type of workout.

OTOH i think a combination of running, cycling, skiing and windsurfing would give you the best all around crosstraining regiment to build an excellent set of legs. although this will be infinitely more difficult glued to a bike forums thread

Hilarious. My mind is more beautiful than my wallet at present- hiring out the Holdsworth was scarring! T'will have to wait. Unless I decide that one of my bikes has become redundant...

Ha! Patience, Master Po. I don't know thing one about FG cycling, including the sorts of frames that would be appropriate. There will be a research period commensurate with the financing period. Any insight is welcome.

Hmm...I could sell the German bike...

Or I could take up a collection from the folks who lament the whole FG phenomenon- surely a 35-yr-old mother of five riding FG is a guaranteed way to kill the fad.

Never thought about it, but yes, I could see it. Both require a certain amount of strength and supplesse. You are constantly weighting and unweighting.

I do cross country skiing (skate ski). It keeps my cardio up for cycling season, but is a totally different muscle set. It is total body cardio, especially if you climb long hills. Nothing in cycling prepares you for it, apart from base fitness. Maybe the fear that hits you on a fixie going 55kph down a hill, clipped in is similar to the down hill ride on skinny skis :-)
