White Shellac?
 

Hello
I could use some advice on shellac, tried it out recently...
I like the protective covering and glossy finish it lends to bar tape; but am looking for a method to have it not tint the tape amber.
ie, I would like to shellac white bar tape but have it remain white. Experiements with 'clear' shellac seem to result in yellow tint...

Anyone know of either a method or alternative coating that would make white bar tape glossy and protected without adding any color?

I would try a different bar tape, like Fizik or lizard skins. Something easy to clean, instead of shellac. I can't think of a coating that wouldn't tint and still be ok to ride with.

I would have to second this, especially if you want it to actually *stay* white..

Good question. I've found even clear shellac has a tint to it. The only thing I've tried that is crystal clear is gloss lacquer from the hobby shop. However, it was so thin it didn't seem to coat well, even with several coats. I might try clear lacquer from the hardware store if you can find it.

Just a thought, and I've never tried it myself, but what about rattle can clear coat in a gloss finish?

clear shellac spray goes on pretty clear. slightest yellow tint, after 3-4 coats.

Maybe Plasti-Dip in white might also work?? It might also stay white longer.

I thought you were looking for a water-clear shellac, but even the most "blond" shellac is not that clear: there's a bit of yellow in it. But there are plenty of white-pigmented shellacs in your LHS: Zinser and Bullseye make some. They are advertised as "stain killing" primers, but what they are is shellac with titanium dioxide (AKA Titanium White pigment). That will keep a white cloth bar tape white.
